Decent starter set but they are pretty lightweight. I'll be upgrading soon. Carbide is nice to have in certain situations. Especially hollowing. But only a supplement for a traditional tool set.

Excellent set for beginners and folks who have a need for carbide tools. I prefer conventional tools and 95 percent of the time I'm using a skew or a bowl gouge. Every once in a while (dealing with crazy grain) nothing will cut like a carbide. Carbide tools have saved my projects a couple times. So whether a beginner or not - I'm of the opinion that it's always nice to have a good set of carbide tools, and this is a nice set at a nice price. I bought my first lathe, an ancient Craftsman with bad bearings, from a guy who showed me 3 carbide tools from one of the wood hobby stores that charges a right huevo for most stuff. I traded a limb and went in and bought a couple of their tools. I could have bought 2 1/2 sets of these for what I paid for those two tools. Aside from the extra inch on the handle they aren't much different from these. I think the carbides are just as good, the screws and wrench is just as good, hardwood handle and rubber grips are too, and this set includes an extra set of carbides. So, at current prices – that would be 10 tools and 10 extra carbides for the price of 2 tools with carbides.I've tried all 4 of these and they all feel comfortable in hand and cut nicely. I used the hollowing tool (with the round carbide) before Christmas to hollow out around 20 balls for ornaments that I made for friends and family. I didn't even turn the carbide and it is still cutting fine – 'course that's on the inside of a ball of wood – not concerned about the finish. Still – cut just fine. I like this set. The tools came in a nice wooden box, with the tools needed to change the carbide bits and 2 spare carbide bits per profile. I haven’t turned in a while, but I’m impressed with the overall quality of these tools, and I like the cushioned grip. They have some heft to them, which I find helpful in stabilizing the tools on the rest. Time will tell, but my first reaction is that these seem like a good value for the money.
