Most carry Micro-spikes that weigh a pound or so and rotate around until the spikes face-up hiking parallel to slopes (which are virtually all trails). Carried these along with the tool - 4oz. A huge weight savings. Chose to start on a reportedly snow-free hundred miles in late May, but ran into an 8mi gauntlet. Took about an hour to install these on Vibram Trail-runners (Topo) sitting on a log as the snowy/icy trail started to become steep.Studs worked way better than Micro-spikes for several reasons, First there's no propensity for the rubber-band to slip sideways, because Grip-Studs have no rubber-bands. Second, author chose the stud locations (including the outer edges of sole's); where Microspikes set their spikes central and close-together under the soles. Grip-Stud's optional 'wide-stance' gives way better traction and control. Third, once Grip-Studs are installed, there's no real need to carry the 3oz tool (unless one wanted to remove studs, to have less impact on floors in civilization, for example?), thus reducing the 'carry-weight' of Grip-Spikes to 1oz. An amazing weight-reduction for any thru-hiker.Grip-Studs make a longer spike and this author's next set will be longer. Chose these due to using them in Trail-runners (glorified tennis-shoes) and was worried about feeling studs through the soles. Even when pressing hard with fingers on the exact stud-location at the thinnest sole location, could not feel the studs from inside the shoe. That's why the next set will be longer. Because while these worked fantastic on ice and adequately on snow, one can always use more stud-length on snow.

Replaced OE Aluminum Bites with Grip Studs and no need to worry about traction while wading in Northwestern Trout and Steelhead rivers again

I finally put these into a set of hunting boots and gave them a try in the backwoods. To be straight......... I need ice to really see how good these are and I've had no icing conditions yet. They most certainly give a lot of extra traction and you will notice the difference......... you will also be heard coming a mile away in your local convenient store. They click and and remove traction when on hard floors. Concrete is no real issue. But these are made for hard dirt, ice and actually help in muddy conditions too.I Recommend You Give Then a Try................ on a used pair of boots first.

Excellent I traction aid. This item comes with everything needed to install the no drill carbide studs. I installed them into a pair of favorite boots that are getting low on tread, and once installed the boots worked great on ice.

Easy to install and totally eliminated the "slip and slide" across algae covered large rocks. I wish I would have purchased and installed these months ago! Also really appreciated their website that recommended the size of studs based on my brand of wading boots. And with the auger style screw I can't imagine any of the studs coming loose.
