The WH31SM soil moisture sensor measures moisture content in the soil in and around your home, with a 915 MHz wireless range of 300 feet (100 meters) line of sight (100 feet under most conditions). The IP66 waterproof sensor features a ceramic cap, which acts like a breathing filter for exchanging soil moisture to the internal sensor. This filter makes the sensor less sensitive to soil density (clay, sand, soil, potting soil, etc.). Add up to 8 soil moisture sensors to your Ambient Weather WS-2000 and WS-5000 weather stations.

The sensor supports up to 8 channels and transmits this information once per 71 seconds to the display console of your choice, or our cloud service AmbientWeather.net. The information can then be accessed through the console, online dashboard, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT, and much more. You can send email, text or IFTTT alerts when watering is required. The console software also allows for 2-point soil type calibration to assure accuracy.

Important Note: The sensor needs to be calibrated before installing in the ground at no more than 4 inches (10 cm) deep.

!st Sensor delivered did not work. Before calibration, the instruction say (after installing the batteries and connecting to WS2000) to let the unit sit at room temperature. The reading should read 0% which it did. The next step was to immerse the probe into a glass of water and within an hour, it should read about 90% moist (one would hope so). Mine never got above 6% after 2 hours. I returned it and Amazon had a replacement the next day. This one worked fine. I had contacted Ambient support but before they got back to me I had returned to Amazon for a replacement. However, support was responsive to my issue and the fix was pretty simple. So kudos to them on the support.

I use this out in our landscape area near our pond area and it gives me a fairly accurate measurement of the soil moisture to allow me to adjust my automatic watering system.

This sensor was easy to add to my system. The test the instructions recommended showed the calibration was correct out of the box. I have no way to confirm its accuracy in the ground, but the readings seem reasonable. In any case, I believe it will help me determine how often I should water my avocados!

Put in the battery, and worked right away! Thought I'd have to spend some time setting up with the central unit, didn't.

We have not had rain for a month and even after calibrating it, my gauge still reads 22%. When I water my garden it goes up to 35%, so I am not sure how accurate it is. Will keep experimenting with it, as the rest of the Ambient system works great and I am very happy with it.

I use these with my weather station and app to monitor all our flower and vegetable gardens remotely! Love them! Not cheap but worth knowing the level of moisture everywhere!

I have been enjoying my WS-2000 weather station for several years and love being able to get real-time data happening right in my own backyard. I recently discovered the soil sensors available as an accessory. This has been an great addition to my weather station and lets me monitor my vegetable garden and newly planted tree right from my kitchen to be sure both are being adequately watered. You can even set up text alerts to notify when levels drop to specified parameters.

Really like my WS-2000 weather station. I have four add-on temperature sensors for various rooms including garage and basement. All Great - use the Ambient Weather app to keep track of the house when I am away. Thought moisture sensors would be a great addition to guide the use of my wifi enable irrigation controller. I purchased two WH31SM - Wish I had read the reviews first. First one passed the calibration test but was VERY slow to respond to change from dry to wet (water emersion). It then took three days to return to a more normal dry reading when removed from the water. The second one failed the initial calibration (water emersion) test never getting above 40% after repeated dry-wet cycles Very disappointed and will return. I really wanted them to work!
