First off, the service from Aoshida Audio Ca. is excellent. Had a minor problem with damage during transit and they responded very quickly and offered a good resolution. The DAC has a good heavy feel and this is due to its solid all metal construction. The input/output terminals are of good quality. It has a nice sized clear, color display with a well designed menu system. There is a front panel knob that controls all menu functions and can be used as a volume control. The remote control works fine. It is the same model as from other recent SMSL DACs and seems to be universal. The sound quality is very good out of the box and it connected to a PC without a hitch and no need for any drivers to be installed. It compares favorably to the sound quality of a high end SACD player. It sounds as good but not better. This is quite good for the selling price. It does improve the quality of sound from a mid level CD player when connected to the digital outs and used as the players DAC before an amplifier.

The DO300EX has a great soundstage and dynamics, I'm very pleased with this DAC and have had no issues with the DO300EX setup and configuration. The DO300EX is currently connected to a Sony UBP-X800M2 Blu-Ray/SACD/CD player via HDMI with a HDMI to I2S converter box into the I2S input on the DO300EX. The CD PCM signal is very good and SACD DSD signal sound excellent through this DAC. I would definitely recommend this DAC to anyone looking for a great listening experience.

I’ve always wanted a “flagship” version of the amazing pocket sized SMSL SU-1 DAC. This is it! I can’t see myself ever parting with this DAC. It’s so easy to use and it has a remote control with volume control and an easy to read screen. That’s all elevating my critical listening to another level of ease and convenience. The various filters are all interesting and change the sound, it’s up to you to find which one(s) synergize the best with your music, rig and room. I like them all, none sound bad. Im also excited to test out my Denafrips Iris DDC using the i2s input. Not sure if which has the better clock but I want to find out. For less than $400, this is the best DAC value I’ve experienced to date. I’ve not heard my tube amp sound so dynamic, accurate, and large before. Looks great too.Update: the internal clock in this DAC via standard USB sounds more accurate than i2s via the Denafrips Iris external DDC reclocker. Now that’s saying something.

Using this in my main stereo system being fed by a Wiim Pro plus (coaxial connection) and cd transport (optical connection). The DAC is connected via balanced xlr into a Quad pre-amplifier. The Quad has an option to bypass the tone shaping circuits for the balanced connections, which is what i selected. The Quad pre then connects to a pair of Neumann studio monitors and sub. Initially I left all the default settings on the SMSL DO300EX unchanged as I wanted to check whether the reviews of it sounding neutral were 'true'. Well it did sound flat, as I expected. The Neumanns do not add anything that isn't in the signal already so what I was hearing was the recording of the music and nothing else. There is a noticeable gain drop when using this DAC compared to using the Wiim plugged direct into the Quad. The Wiim has an AKM chipset also (AK4493SEQ) so I'm not sure if this behaviour is related to the pcm filters always being 'on'. With ESS based DACS there is usually an option to turn off the filters. That might be important to you or not, so you might want to choose your chipset carefully. I messed about with the volume pot on the SMSL and settled on -3dB in the end. You are able to 'lock' the volume pot at your chosen level in the comprehensive menu to prevent unwanted changes. Next I altered the sound colour setting and noticed very subtle changes between each setting. Like really subtle! I reverted back to the default filter '1) sharp roll-off'. The included manual provides basic information only. There is no illustration or description of how the sound profiles or pcm filters alter the sound spectrum. You will have to go online to find the graphical plots of the filters for the chipset installed in this device.Listening to a variety of music sources it is obvious that the level of detail is excellent and comparable to the Wiim Pro Plus direct as you would expect. Forget terms like "warm" or "less digital" sounding, this is a DAC. Phrases by AKM of "sound as if you were there" are marketing mumbo jumbo! Everything else in the chain has to be up to scratch too for this to be a close reality. What I did find was that listening to this DAC for several hours straight was more pleasurable than when listening through the Wiim Pro Plus direct. Even with the Wiim's EQ abilities. This DAC does a job and it does it very well. No glitches, no hair on the sound, just a conversion with all the detail present. The headphone stage is an added feature which might sway your final decision.

Upgrading from the amazing SMSL SU-1. I was very fortunate to get one during the 30% off sale from $469 to $328 last week. Same AKM flagship DAC chips configuration as the D400EX, SU9 Ultra and the Gustard A26 - all using AK4191 + 4499XE configuration. An extra bonus, this has a headphone amp. The sound in the first 72 hours was stiff then after 4 days and after playing around with the PCM filters and the Sound Colors it sounded more fluid with huge, deep soundstage and very defined sonic images, holographic. Connected RCA solid metal splitters on the L+R lineout of the DAC, one set going to the amp and the other going to L&R subs. WOW, the integration of the subwoofers low end to the BW speakers mid-range is jaw dropping giving super large images with very defined bass lines. Even at low volumes at night all frequencies are crystal clear and well defined with sonic images emerging from dark background in a very deep soundstage that made music by Patrick O Hearn, Mars Lasar and others very enjoyable to listen to and eerie at the same time. This SMSL DO300 EX is a real gem for what it does and for the price I paid for it. This is really an amazing DAC and I did not expect it to perform this good. SMSL is ahead of the game. Also thanks to AOSHIDA.BTW....this is a great DAC....for audiophile recordings, playback sounds best using optical or coax BUT for streaming ROCK music, I found using the BLUETOOTH connection gives the fattest and more enjoyable resolution since you do not really care too much about depth, imaging and all the hifi audiophile mumbo jumbo.

I needed a DAC that could receive a direct DSD audio stream through an I2S input, particularly one that was compatible with the Chinese made HDMI to I2S audio splitter fed by a Sony Blu Ray/SACD player. This is just what I needed. I like the fact that this also has the SPDIF optical and coax inputs as well. The remote is a definite plus. The line and headphone outputs make this a versatile DAC.

This DAC AMP combo sounds awesome! Smooth and transparent. Plenty of power for 99% of headphones. The only issue I had was with crackling in windows even with the SMSL drivers installed. They need to figure that out. Random crackling sounds on 2 different windows PC's. Other than that, this unit performed excellent in all regards. Hope they update the drivers soon for everyone.

Coming from a Schiit Audio Gungnir DS version I sold it and bought the DO300ex based on the new AKM chipset 4499. The 300ex is a good dac with great detail, air, separation and bass slam but after a week my ears are hurting, and the overall sound doesn't seem natural to me. The unit lacks soul and emotion to me so I just returned it. I hope this helps your buying decisions. I'm still on the hunt for something new but in the interim my modi multibuilt OG works perfect for now.Happy Listening,
