That's a funny looking keyboard. That’s right, it is. It isn’t really even a keyboard. It’s a PCB. Super-flat, with no moving parts. Will it track lightning-fast synth solos? You bet. Better than a traditional keyboard, actually. Will it let you be expressive? Of course, it’s not only pressure sensitive, but also offers poly-aftertouch. This means each key can control parameters in a different way depending on how much you touch. You can also use its USB, MIDI, and CV outputs to control instruments in your DAW and modular synths. This also means that you can also use MicroFreak as a controller to experience polyphonic aftertouch with cutting edge software instruments.

Inspired by the trailblazing 12-dB SEM filter, you can make MicroFreak’s filter scream or whisper to taste. The filter is state-variable, and can even auto-oscillate! You can use this is any way you like, from taking the edge of the razor-sharp wavetable sounds, or automating the cutoff by modulating it with keyboard pressure or the in-built sequencer.

Keep it simple here…this is a great synth for beginners to figure out arpeggios, mild sound design, and light fun. Nice and portable.The sound engine is Ok. Not a powerful synth. The analog filter is just ok. The vocoder isn’t great. You need a strong signal even with the settings on high.If you want a great vocoder there are free vsts.

There's not much I can add here that the other reviews don't mention. If you're looking for a synth that's a lot more than a few oscillators and LFOs slapped together, this is a great little box that punches well above its price point.Hundreds of built-in presets, all the connectivity from CV/Gate to USB type-B to MIDI in/out, and an oddball PCB keyboard with aftertouch/breath control that's actually kind of fun - tap with a fingertip to get a quiet sound, slap with your whole finger to get a loud sound. 64 step sequencer, enough knobs and a multifunction slider for messing about live, and an absolute ton of buttons and options for deeper fiddling. Wrap this up with a powerful vocoder and you've got a very well-named synth.Do make sure you grab the latest firmware, apparently there's bugs in older revisions that an update will fix. You can also use the available software to transfer whole banks of presets at once.

I have a lot of synths and have been using them for about 25 years. I actually didn’t keep this synth, for one reason I will explain. But in my time with this synth, I realized it is a stellar value and will offer hours of enjoyment to anyone who likes synths and especially beginners. It’s an easy to use synth that sounds good and covers a whole lot of sonic territory. It can even scratch the modular itch. But for me, it has no distortion or way to warm up the sound, so it wasn’t for me (I live for filter drive etc). But other than that, great unit!

Me ha encantado, es mi primer sintetizador. Los presets que contiene te dan una idea de lo que se puede generar en este minimonstruo, le puedo conectar una batería USB o usarlo como controlador MIDI. Las teclas al principio cuesta acostumbrarse, pero con práctica se arregla. El vocoder es aceptable. La mejor compra que he hecho en el año.
