Instructions:

  1. Remove the laces from your skates and insoles
  2. Heat the area of discomfort with a hairdryer for about 5 minutes for Bont fiberglass boots or in the oven for Bont carbon boot. Refer to your boot manufacturer's heat molding instructions.
  3. Open the Rip Jaws and use the knob at the end of the handle to open it up widely.
  4. Put the Rip Jaws over the problem area and use the same knob to tighten the screw.
  5. Pull the handles together so it locks in place.
  6. Wait a few minutes for the boot to cool and then unlock the Rip Jaws

You can do this process again if need be. Remember that if you have a blister or a painful spot on your foot, it's best to let it heal before testing the boot because your foot will still feel pain if it has not healed.

HISTORY

Bont Skates was founded in Sydney in 1975 when Inze Bont, a recreational short track ice speed skater decided to fiberglass the back of his leather speed skates to gain more support. Bont quickly became the world's largest producer of ice speed skates and then branched out into inline speed skates, quad speed skates, roller derby skates, and long track speed skates. Bont was the first footwear manufacturer to use exotic materials like fiberglass in 1974, Kevlar in 1986 and Carbon Fiber in 1989, and the first to use heat moldable resins and thermoplastics. Bont was also the first company to use adjustable ice blades and remains the world's largest producer of speed skates and custom speed skates.

Works as expected but not great for smaller skates or doing more "precise" punch-outs in the toe box area. Would love an oblong version of this tool.

Great value, works beautifully! This is a great alternative to the bench model. I use it for punching out tender spots on EDEA skating boots,

For a few years I would size up in my skate boot and engage in some seriously creative lacing techniques to accommodate my bunions. I've been skating for 32 years (ugh...) and have never built my own skates, always just kind of grabbed whatever decent boots were hanging around within my budget and sized up until the width of my feet wasn't creating too many problems. At this age though I'm sick to death of compromising and have the means for truly custom skates, and the wider boots available now are absolutely life changing. Between Bont and others like the Riedell Solaris, I FINALLY have real choices. Not perfect, but so much better.Picking these up I waffled a long while, I saw them, and was wildly indecisive. They're pricey. Really not inexpensive for a tool I won't use frequently. Then I looked at my closet. I contemplated. I hate shoes. I hate skate boots. I love skating. I love my new skates. They're still not comfortable and I'm too weird to ask for help. Anytime shoes aren't strictly necessary I'm outside barefoot like an absolute hippie. Driving barefoot (it's legal, google it, I swear), everything. My feet are gnarly, I don't mind in the slightest. I love my feet, bunions and all and I'm not about to surgically alter them and maybe risk more pain for something I've spent my life already dealing with. This fixes that. These worked on all of my boots (I'd do the spot test just to material check depending) and made my life exponentially more comfortable. These are a game changer. The quality is here, this is... super heavy and feels indestructible. Also may work as a home defense object. This dude is crazy. I can't say if it works better than other options out there, but the handle quality and durability of this alone, I feel like this is a much more modern solution and looks like it's just an easier situation to deal with. (Buy it for life in a nutshell.)The packaging here is also glorious, Bont quality. If you know someone who refuses to wear shoes, embarrasses you, has mentioned foot pain, obvious bunions or hammertoes, feet wide in weird places, or is in a league, this is the ultimate gift. Better if they're a skater and have a reference for Bont as a brand.

I’ve played roller hockey for years and also ice skated. We’ve recently moved close to a rink and I got my husband to try skating again as an adult and he loved it. So we bought skates and despite buying good skates we both had hot spots. Then miraculously this thing was suggested for me to try, and it works! Thinking back on all the years I played hockey and had to break in skates without the rip jaws, I feel so bad for my teenage self! If you skate regularly do yourself a favor and get the tool. As others have said, read up on the model of skates you have to see if it needs heat, moisture, etc. but a great tool that helped us want to get out on the rink more.

This was an item I never knew existed. I ordered it for my boys because they skate a lot and complain of hot spots when breaking in a new pair. After I saw it I thought, hey this might work for me. I am in boots every day for work. In my occupation some days I might walk over 20 miles. Boots are expensive so if I get a pair that don't break in great, my feet constantly pay the price because I can't afford to just buy another pair. My current pair were rubbing my little toes so bad that my toenails deformed and fell off. I used this on my boots and it was almost instant relief!!! Not just for skates, use on every day wear, combat boots, etc. If you struggle breaking in shoes, these are for you.

After years of relying on "the kid at the pro shop" I can now take care of the hotspots on my skates myself. When you can take your time and really find that right spot this tool will take care of it. Some things to note... each type of skate, boot etc.. is a little different. Be sure to do your research before jumping in. Many require heat, some might require a little moisture. Either way the Rip Jaws do the job. The ball is the right size and the edge of the cup is smoothed so it limits potential damage to the outside of the boot. It did leave a small circular mark on my carbon fiber skate boots but I did have to heat them up significantly and get aggressive with the pressure so I wouldn't consider it 'normal' but wanted to include. It is purely aesthetic and doesn't hurt anything so I don't consider it an issue. But if you're concerned about leaving any marks I would recommend a piece of cloth or leather between the boot and the cup. There are certain situations where the cup needs to pivot just slightly more but again not a deal breaker. The Rip Jaws are nice quality and do the job they're made to do very well. No complaints. Buy with confidence.
