Read Before You Buy

It's not for the monitor with DisplayPort input, it's a uni-directional adapter. It will NOT work if your video source is DVI and the monitor is with DisplayPort input. Another solution, DVI to DisplayPort with external power input is required.

What is the difference between a passive and active DisplayPort converter?

When you convert video from a source that uses DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort to DVI or HDMI (for example, a computer to a monitor), you will need to consider the difference between passive and active adapters.

If the source supports dual-mode DisplayPort (also known as DP++), then you can use a passive adapter because the source can perform the conversion. If the source does not support DP++, then you need to use an active converter, which includes additional chips to perform the conversion.

Passive Adapters

Passive adapters are less expensive since they do not need to include additional chips. A quick way to check whether you can use a passive adapter is to see if the DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort source has the DP++ symbol above it. The symbol is a D with a P inside of it, with two + signs to the left, one on top of the other.

Active Adapters

Active adapters use additional chips to make the conversion inside the adapter, regardless of whether the source supports DP++. This means that active adapters are more expensive than passive adapters.

If you want to use multiple monitors with the same computer, you should use an active adapter because some video cards cannot run the maximum number of monitors while using DP++. This is especially true if the computer has more than one DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort connection. Check with your video card manufacturer to confirm which type of adapter you need for the setup that you would like to run.

This cable worked great for what I needed. I bought a new mini computer that had hdmi and dp ports. My monitor had only dvi. Now, I'm all set.

While other devices I have could use a DP-to-DVI cable and "just work," I found out some devices do not support all the signals to do this. The CalDigit TC3+ dock is one example. A passive cable cannot be used. This one did the trick. "It works." Not much else to say.

Bought to utilize the third input (DVI) on several TVs we use, works great. Be forewarned, and this isn't a cable problem, but some video cards/computers won't send audio over a DVI cable like this. Don't blame the cable, it's a limitation of your computer or TV.

I'm totally blind, I got this to use with my new computer and my old 19 inch computer monitor. Not like I need a high end one being I can't see anyway and the refresh rate that this supports is the same as what the monitor supports. lol.I needed one that I culd plug into the computer tower that sits on the floar and to the side of the desk so I can reach it. The cable needs to run along the side of the desk, through a hold in teh side of it, then up through the top of the desk to the monitor. 6 foot cable will not work, they are to short in this case. My old monitor is a DVI connection and my new PC only supports HDMI and DP connections for the display. So I went with a DP to DVI cable. Plugged in teh cable to the monitor first and then plugged it into my PC after feeding it through the spots the cable needed to thread through. Turned on the PC and it detected the monitor and installed the device drivers for it. At that point, I just had to asume it worked being I can't see it.A few weeks later, had a sighted person come over to help me with changing some settings in the BIOS of the computer being I wanted a few things turn on and off to meet my needs. They could see the screen so the cable worked. At some point, I'll probably go and buy a new monitor! But no hurry for me. I like this old square one. Buttons I can feel and the like. Normally leave it turn off being I don't need it. Just need it for people when they need to help me and to keep some web site happy. With no monitor connected! Some web site don't behave nice at all with the screen reader I use.

This review is for the more expensive active cables. I ordered 2 for both monitors.Setup: Lenovo laptop, Thunderbolt USB-C docking station, one 30" monitor in landscape mode and one 27" monitor in portrait mode (slightly older DVI models). These cables fixed all my random dual monitor blackouts and surprisingly the monitors are running at their native resolution of 2560x1600... I was so thrilled about the blackout issue going away that I would have been happy with the products description which said they maxed out at 1920x1200...This is a first for me, a product description being wrong in the favor of the consumer. 100% recommend the "Active cable" for anybody out there needing to adapt display port to DVI monitors.

It is an active type of DisplayPort to DVI adapter which supports my new Dell monitor's MST (daisy chain) output to my old Dell monitor with DVI input port (passive type adapter won't work).

Forget buying DisplayPort to DVI adapters – buy these. They are the same cost as an active adapter, and you don’t have to deal with older DVI cables. I recently got a CalDigit TB3 dock for my mobile workstation and it required active DisplayPort to DVI adapters if you wanted to use DCI cables. All the adapters we had were passive so instead of getting an active adapter I recommended we buy these active cables. They were perfectly and the cables are SOLID. The connectors are nice on both ends as well. You really can’t go wrong with these if you are using older monitors that use DVI/VGA. My company tends to buy el-cheapo monitors and the poor color drives me insane. I have “older” LG IPS displays that I have been super happy with, but they don’t support native DisplayPort – so these cables solved my problem wonderfully. I HIGHLY recommend these.
