The only issue I have with this encoder is that the mounting holes on the bottom go through the case, allowing contaminants in to the wire spool if it's mounted any other way. If you're not planning on mounting this by the bottom face, plan on plugging the bottom mounting holes with grub screws or bolts. Other than that, the finishing is nice and each face is square and flat. The action of the encoder is smooth and the spring tension does not increase excessively at the end of travel. It seems to be made with a long clockspring that has moderate preload and plenty of extra length, so the increase in tension as the encoder extends isn't too extreme.

This encoder is a viable replacement for a few different brands of draw-wire encoders, and offers comparable performance at a significant discount.Since it's standard 4-20mA output, it will work with most existing control systems, though it might require a little re-calibration if you're replacing a different brand.Seems to give acceptable performance down to 12V, though it's rated for 24.
