When I first opened this I was really impressed. It laid perfectly flat and the black color was really nice. Putting it together was simple, and the instructions provided were easy to understand. However, there are some pretty significant design flaws that showed up when I used it. First, the ash and hot coals will drip out the bottom. I wasn't expecting that and was disappointed that the poor design allowed this to happen. They should have included some kind of plate to put underneath this if that was expected, or just improved the design so that wouldn't happen. I had to keep putting water on the ground under it to ensure I didn't start a fire outside of this little fire pit. Also, after using it just the one time, the black finish is completely ruined (burnt off in most spots, and the metal itself bent from the heat of the fire. This made getting the pieces back apart incredibly difficult. And since they're all bent, this no longer lays flat. I could still fit the pieces into the included bag, but I was disappointed in the poor quality. Also, the gloves included are quite small. I have very small hands (I can wear children's bracelets and rings) so the gloves fit me perfectly, but I'm assuming this wasn't made for children so I was surprised with just how snug the gloves were on my small hands. All that said, could I cook on it? Yes. But only for a very brief time. this is because this is very small so you basically have to build the fire, wait for the flames to die down, put your food on, and get it fully cooked before the coals are so cold as to be useless. Using sticks and things from the yard and some pellets, I got probably 10-20 minutes of cooking time and it did work to cook the frozen veggie patty I put on it. But the fire and coals die out really quickly in this thing. After cooking that patty, it took at least 20 minutes to get a fire going again because the coals had died down so much. But, since it achieved the purpose, I had to give it 3 stars. But the design flaws are big detractors that mean I don't think this will be anything other than a backup to my backup plans... and never again unless I put something underneath it that won't catch fire as the burning coals fall through.

Lately I have camped a few places that do not allow ground fires and do not provide fire rings. I started packing a small smokeless firepit and while they are smokeless, I'm not really feeling the heat. Not so with this Bearfire portable grill. It breaks down into a very tiny bag and sets up in just a few minutes. It lights easily and, since there are lots of air holes, the wood burns very quickly but you can feel the heat very well. The radiant heat even projects down so your feet are warm.It doesn't really catch the ash well and even lets some coals through the bottom so I will put it on a single-use aluminum pan or heat-proof grill mat or something. Once it is cool, it breaks down as quickly as it went together and it and all of its accessories fit in the bag. The carry bag is very light duty and I think the heavy, relatively sharp corners of the grill will destroy it relatively quickly. I love that it comes with a little fire poker and gloves. I haven't heat tested the gloves yet I'll update this review if they get melty when you touch a hot surface.

Impressively thick material with good surface area. It's very useable, for grilling or just a fire pit. Too heavy for backpacking, but carp camping or picnicking, this this is great. If you do like me, I tossed the instructions aside--how hard can it be? Like wrangling cats until you KNOW how to do it. After 5 minutes, I eventually was successful, so I took it all apart then grabbed the instructions. This is one of those things that MAKES SENSE to use the instructions, when you follow the instructions, this goes together without a single curse word. While the grill is very robust, even the grate on top is NOT BAD, the carry case/bag is pretty flimsy. I'll keep an eye out for a better storages/transport bag, but otherwise, I was very impressed with this kit.

Works perfectly! This shocked me how well it can handle the heat without the paint/coating burnning off, i got it fairly hot and nothing, looked nearly like when i got it! Directs heat back towards the food your cooking well, helps with smoke and allows it to burn hot! Has a trap for ashes to fall underneath to help keep the coals burning hot. The only thing this needs is a top, I have only used charcoal and wood in this and not pellets, but assuming they would work as well. Over time the paint will eventually (im assuming) come off. Not cook off but rather chip off due to heating it over and over, that's inevitable, however i could be wrong. I haven't has something thats portable like this that hasnt had the paint come off first time using it and this one held up like a champ so it surprised me. The metal scraper/hook they give you works great but the metal screw they got into the wooden handle is junk. After using it a few times it becomes wobbly and no longer usable for its purpose, so i recommend replacing it with something else or making your ownhole to put it in without it coming out. This is also sturdy and heavy, thick steel, i do believe its stainless steel. They give you exactly as described and shown in there pictures as they show you get. The bag they give you is a bit sketchy as it all seems to be a bit too heavy for it but it works, probably will tear eventually but it does work. Overall its definitely soemthing that i recommend especially for using for camping! Its a great, portable way of using a quick and easy/simple way of grilling or cooking food over a grill. Highly recommend!

A lot of portable stoves / grills go with small gauge steel for weight savings, but this one does not. It's nice, robust steel. It's obviously not designed for backpacking or other ultralight camping situations, but it's great for car camping, tailgating, etc. It comes with a nylon carrying case . . which is probably the one thing about it that is not very robust. It's pretty thin. It's barely adequate. We'll see how long it lasts. I'll probably try to find a better option for that eventually.
