I like to use inexpensive inserts like this in my teaching labs so students can make mistakes and it won't cost an arm and a leg. These inserts certainly cut metal, but don't expect them to produce aerospace grade parts. Great inserts to learn with so you can chew them up and spit them out.

I had good success until I tried an interrupted cut and got some chipping of the insert, but that's usual for a lot of different inserts. I'm continuous cuts I had no issues in mild steel.
