This is a fancy setup for sharpening chisels. While the whetstone itself is great and the rest of the gear is high quality, it will take a little getting used to in order to make the best use of this kit. I have a variety of chisels, some expensive, some cheap.Getting an edge on a traditional whetstone is simple and intuitive although if you are not careless, you can get the bevel wrong or end up making the surface of your stone uneven. Still, it takes just seconds to set up.With this kit you can ensure that you get a precise, even edge every time. The tradeoff, however, is that this is kind of fiddly and time-consuming to set up. In all honesty, I most likely will use this stone on its own more often than I will use it with the roller. That's not a mark against the quality of the product itself, it's because habits are hard to break. Given time and practice, I'm sure that using this full kit would become 2nd nature but until then, I think that for my own uses, I would only be taking the time and care for my most expensive chisels when I can sit down and spare the time to ensure the proper use and setup.

I have been known to abuse my chisels in the shop. Sometimes they can be utilized for more than just chipping away at wood. Because of that, many of my chisels had become dull and even chipped. I had tried to sharpen them by hand, but it got too frustrating trying to keep the angle consistent. I had seen sharpening kits like this before but never used one.Setting this one up is simple. Widen the holder for your chisel width, set the angle, and then clamp it down. There is a set screw to hold the chisel flush to the guide. Then you simply move it across the stone to sharpen. Start on the more coarse side to remove more material, then hone on the fine side. I was able to remove some chipped sections from my chisels and make them like new again. Wishing I had this in my shop a long time ago.

The stone is OK, but there is enough play in the guide even after tightening that I ended up putting an edge on my chisel that was not square. I got another guide from gohelper (also on amazon) that worked much better, and came with a set up tool to set the angle precisely to a variety of common angles.

This is a decent little tool that works well. It holds chisels and plane irons well and isn't difficult to use. The full length roller is a plus. If you want to know how to set it up to get your angle you need to refer to the ad and write down the dimensions they show in the ad and look at ALL the pictures etc in the ad. If you do that and you have half a brain it's pretty easy to use. You'll also need a ruler marked in millimeters. I sharpened 3 very abused chisels and one poorly ground block plane iron in the first go. I had to do lots of honing because the angles were so far off. All 4 tools are very sharp now and they're the sharpest I've ever had. The edges look like new. Luckily I had a 150 grit diamond hone to do the initial cut to reset the angles. I'll be buying more diamond hones in grits from 150 to 3000. This little tool just works!

I've hardly even gotten any use out of the stones before pieces started chipping off of the surfaces on both sides. Hard to tell with pictures alone but you definitely feel them when sharpening.
