3.Description
The ADS1220 is a precision 24-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) that provides a number of integrated features to reduce system cost and part counts for measuring small sensor signals.
The device implements two differential or four single-ended inputs via a flexible input multiplexer (MUX), whisper, programmable gain amplifier (PGA), two programmable excitation current sources, a voltage reference, an oscillator, a low-side switch, and a precision temperature sensor.
The device can convert at a data rate of 2000 samples per second (SPS) with single-cycle settling. At 20 SP, digital filters provide simultaneous 50 Hz and 60 Hz rejection for noisy industrial applications.
The internal PGA provides high gain to 128 V/V.
The PGA makes the ADS1220 ideally suited for applications that measure small sensor signals such as resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), thermocouples, thermistors, and resistance bridge sensors.

I am usually pessimistic about cheap chips like this, but this one really exceeded my expectations. It took me a while to figure out how to set it up using a 4x half-bridge load cells in a wheatstone bridge, but it worked first time when I finally got it. I used the ADS1220_WE library in the Arduino IDE with a Seeeduino XIAO chip, with 4x 50kg load cells, and 128x gain on this chip. The key seemed to be hooking up the REFp0 and REFn0 to two of opposite bridge leads AND to +V/GND, and connecting the other two leads to AIN1 and AIN2, then in the sketch make sure it's using REF_0 pins not REF_1 pins, and to use _MUX_1_2 (for AIN1 and AIN2).I immediately started getting good results. I was a little impatient with the calibration, so I'm get numbers off by about 0.1lbs, but otherwise, it produces surprisingly stable readings. It's amazing I can tap the platform lightly with my finger and it detects it, and I can also stand on the platform and it accurately measures my weight.I wouldn't hesitate to buy this chip for my next load cell project.

This module is built with the Texas Instruments ADS1220 analog-to-digital converter IC. It has 4 inputs with a resolution of 24 bits and a maximum sampling rate of 2ksps. It seems to be pretty well supported by hobbyists and a library is available for use in Arduino IDE to easily integrate this device into your project.
