If you are needing cold weather pants, these are the modern upgrade from those old denim fleece lined jeans - that are often NOT assembled in America. Softshells are lighter, the material is often faced with a water repellent coating, fleece lining is bonded on one side with a membrane between - which is highly wind resistant and water shedding. They absorb much less water, and in damp conditions shrug it off, unlike heavy cotton materials. Softshells have been around for over 40 years, and were always based on an exterior synthetic with water shedding and vapor permeable materials. It was in the 80s when they were bonded with fleece and they became a preferred outer garment in questionable weather. Often worn under hard shell expedition grade jackets, they allow you to layer and work well being light, warm, stretchy, and comfortable.CQR is one of the better makers coming in and their patterns emulate some of the high end styles being sold for 4x more. Like denim jeans, with the dozens of manufacturers other than Levi, competition on the market has created more affordable versions and that means you and I can afford them. You can buy twice and not cry at all.In this specific case I thought I had ordered "Coyote" but got Utility Camo - Khaki is the closest I would call it. Getting exact duplicates of American military colorways is an inexact science - even firearms makers have issues with it. As far as fitting into the winter wardrobe, it's blending in where Coyote is the next darker shade with a gold tinge. I have no issues with it. They fit and work well, the numbering system is as accurate as any other American Brand - if in doubt, size up one for winter use. Don't expect them to shrink a half size the way denim does. These will replace my fleece and flannel lined jeans in the long run, they perform better in the weather, resist wind and temps, have pockets where you need them. This particular pair has leg zips with shallow pockets for venting in warmer weather or if you are in and out doors, or driving. Im sitting in a room with a wood stove at 250F, ambient is 74F, and they are just fine. Outside in 15F, still cozy. I can see a pair in Navy, Utility Gray being added, along with the Multicam I bought for hunting. The future is now . . .

Initially snagged the standard ripstop pants in this pattern from CQR and decided to grab these as an option for cooler weather and am impressed.Pros:- Pretty Lightweight- Durable material- True to fit- Comfortable with enough flex- Vents on the thighs and at the bottoms of each leg- Zippered pockets- Button as opposed to a snap for the flyCons:- A little noisy- Could use cargo pocketsOverall I give them a 4.5/5Really impressed by the gridfleece liner and the material used for the vents. I have no doubts they’ll keep me warm and have long lasting durability.

So far these are as quality if not slightly better than many high priced “fancy” name branded pants. The fleece is bonded to the exterior fabric so there isn’t some baggy double fabric feeling to them. They are water resistant but I like some extra insurance so I treated them with additional nikwax tech wash and fabric. The pants are stretchy and comfortable. I would generally say that may be slightly oversized and they do have an elastic waist band so that may give extra leeway on size. Frankly for the price they are great. I wouldn’t consider the fabric mega heavy duty (not carhartt duck fabric) BUT they aren’t super stiff type of pants. For most purposes the fabric should work perfectly if you are in a situation that polyester fabric is ok. Purchased 4 pairs for my family.

Let me say that these pants cost me around $40.00. I did not expect high end quality compared to the big name hunting clothing manufacturers. With my expectation in check, I ordered a set to see how they compare to the Kuiu pants. In short they are not all that close, but I realized several things I like about these pants. They are sturdy and seem to take a beating. They are warm when doing winter activities, but when sitting for long periods, the knee area gets chilly even with merino base layers on. I wore them out in 20 degree weather with a 20ish mile an hour wind. Mostly sitting, and that’s when I knew that my knees were getting cold, but I needed to know the limits of these pants. On another hunting outing, I sat in -2 weather with almost no wind and was fairly comfortable, but again my knees got a little chilly. I noticed that if I stood up, this wasn’t an issue. I am sure if it was layered properly this could be overcome. I had a successful hunt that morning and had to really work to get the animal back to the truck. I noticed that once I got back, my phone had a severe amount of moisture on it. That’s when I noticed that when I am really active the pants hold moisture. This is a big negative if I was going to hike a long distance and then sit down to glass. Luckily my hunting spots are usually within a couple hundred yards of the truck in MN. The pants do shed moisture very well, but once the fleece on the inside is wet, they take a little while to dry. Turn them inside out to dry (pro tip). I have since used them to clear snow and build an ice rink for my kids. They do very well if I stay active, but again they get a moisture build up on the inside. The pockets are awesome! Well thought out and very roomy. I wear a size 34x32 jean and order the same in these pants. They fit perfect over base layers with room to layer on more clothes if needed. They also fit really good by themselves and a good riggers belt (they don’t bunch). The belt loops are exactly what I wanted. The spacing and sturdiness of the loops allow me to put gear on my belt and not pull down my pants, also keeps them from bunching up as I tighten the belt. I am giving these 5 stars. My expectation was that I was buying $40 utility winter pants, not high end hunting gear.
