The sharpener works great on charcoal pencils. I tried several other sharpeners that claimed to be good at it… and they all made me feel stupid with their poor results. With the sharpener, I was able to quickly sharpened several charcoal pencils, and show that in my photo. It gave great results on several brands of charcoal pencils, including some that I had given up on because the pencils themselves got poor marks for being fragile. The sharpener seemed to do well on all the brands. All my charcoal pencils are useful again. I really like to use white charcoal pencils for layout lines on dark lumber. Before the sharpener, the only effective technique for sharpening that I had found was whittling. The sharpener gives an inexpensive option that is even better than whittling.

Really does what it says - sharpens your charcoal and pastel pencils with much less breakage than standard sharpeners. I never liked working with these types of pencils because I prefer the sharp points achievable with graphite and colored pencils, in order to render fine details. Now I will revisit my choice, and start working again especially with pastel pencils. You won't get the same degree of sharpness as with graphite or colored pencils, but you'll get a lot closer than with standard sharpeners. As far as breakage, that hasn't been a problem with my pastel pencils, but it is a little tricky with extra-soft charcoal pencils (not medium however). So, you may have to back off when the point is "sharp enough", and not go for an ultra-sharp point. As for the value for the money, it's true that the price seems too high for a little piece of plastic. But if it is the only way to get the sharpness you want, then it's worth it.

cheaply made standard hand twist pencil sharpener not at all what I thought it would be....thought it would be larger so could actually shave the pencil not have to twist it like regular pencil sharpener which destroys pastel material in pencil

I bought this because I read that sharpening soft pastels can be tricky. It works great with my STABILO CarbOthello soft pastel pencils. I have not broken any tips and I get a nice sharp point for drawing details.

🖍 and ✏️ sharpeners are a bit different. Adult colored pencils have sharpeners made for that. Makeup pencils need sharpeners of a higher quality. And then, various kinds of art pencils need a good basic art pencil quick sharpener until/unless you use utility knives as sharpeners.THIS product is fairly inexpensive and reliably goodfor most art ✏️ to sketch, shade, and lay down sections of color. GO for it!

Many pastel pencils are NOT easy to sharpen-and single pastel pencils are not cheap. This is a lot to pay for a simple hand-held sharpener. Should come with 2 or 3 replacement blades. But it does work with my Derwent pastel pencils. I think it has something to do with the angle of the blade, so that the wood at the base of the point doesn't get too thin. I had resorted to a hobby knife and sandpaper, but, so far, a welcome tool for pastel pencil work.

I have never felt such a lightweight terribly cheap plastic. Spent $10 for something that will not last, I’m certain. Really flimsy feel. Sharpens as well as my M&R sharpener, which I love. This isn’t worth sending back.

Thick pastel pencils are always a challenge to sharpen without breaking the lead so I was amazed and happy that the Derwent pastel pencil sharpener so cleanly put a point on it. But, I've only used it about 4 times and already it's not so sharp, leaving a rough cutting in the wood and breaking off the pastel core. So, overall, I think it's overpriced.

I have tried them all. I have spent up to $25 on a single sharpener. And none of them worked on my Pitt Pastel Pencils... till now. All of the other sharpeners will work once or twice, then stop. The Derwent Pastel Sharpener was my last resort before giving up and using a knife, which I hate. As you can see, it works beautifully. It will sharpen to a point - but I rarely want that effect for my drawing, so I go with about 3/4 sharp. This design allows the point to emerge without breaking, I don't know why, but I am very, very happy !Derwent Pastel is The One!
