I can never seem to tune the A on my violin quickly so I thought this tuner would be perfect. My other Stradpet pieces are thoughtfully engineered and beautifully made; worth the premium price. Unfortunately, this tuner’s arm didn’t fit quite the existing string slot on my tailpiece (slot too narrow and short in length). My tailpiece must also be thicker than what this is designed for—once I modified my tailpiece as much as possible, I could only get one thread of the securing screw to catch and the ball of the string was touching the top of the tailpiece. I use Dominants and the ball fit fine, but perhaps because of the ball hitting the tailpiece, the A string sounded off. Considering if I should return it, swap out my tailpiece, or save it for a future instrument…

After so many years of frustration, I finally decided to add a string adjuster to my A string. But I did not want the regular string adjuster with a long prong to hold ball end of the string. When I read description on this adjuster, I was very intrigued. I watched the accompanying video five times and finally decided to order two for E and A strings. Now that I have installed them, I was so worried that A and E strings’ ball ends might pop out. A week into it, they have not. I am still worried but would like to order a few more for my other violins. I am using smaller top screws but will replace with bigger ones (they are also included) as I seem to have difficulty grabbing the small ones during quick adjustment.

I weighed it to be about 1.7 grams, which is half the weight of the other premium tuner I’ve got.Looks good, easy to use. Substantially reduces the weight of your tailpiece - especially if you use more than one tuner.

I like the light weight, elegant design and clean appearance of these tuners. Generally speaking, and within reason, the lighter the tailpiece of a violin-family instrument is, the better. The post is rounded so it will not cut the loop on your E-string or steel core A-string—no losable plastic pad or smoothing of sharp edges needed. The picture with the red and black ended strings has the Stradpet tuner. The one with the blue and silver ended strings has a (much older) commonly-available competitor (replaced a few minutes later with a Stradpet.)The cons are that when using the small headed screw, they are a bit hard to turn. However, they do get easier with use, and you can put a judicious tiny bit of oil or grease on the threads of the screw, which helps. The threaded shaft of the large headed screw is a bit longer than it needs to be, which is the main reason I didn't use them. This is a matter of taste. Another arguable con is that you need tools (the supplied hex key) to install or uninstall them. The tuners come in a small and sturdy plastic bag, so I keep the hex key and the unused screw in my case as a spare. These aren't cheap, but tuners tend to last a very long time. The violin with the Stradpet in my pictures is pushing 80 years old, and had a genuine W. E. Hill tuner on it that just might be as old. The competitor product on the other violin is probably about 20 years old. Both are still serviceable.I believe the pros greatly outweigh the cons, and indeed, wrote this review while coming back to order more of them.
