I'm not sure if it's normal to smell so bad, but it reeked!! Was a little worried using this product because of the smell and appearance. The liquid was a dark brown color.

Like others said, the stench of this thing will really hit you when you open the bottle but honestly what were they expecting lmao? Bacteria never smells good whether it’s good or bad. Expect a natural fertilizer like smell and look, and I’m assuming that’s kind of what this is but a regulated and specific strain of bacteria so don’t try to use fish fertilizer made for plants or something like that. But open a window or make sure to close the lid on your tank when you use this. It’s not too bad and the smell will disappear within a few minutes. Just close the lid immediately after you finish using the bottle. As for performance? This stuff really works. The first night I used this I didn’t see much of a difference but you have to wait for the bacteria to do its thing and fight off the bad bacteria. It will never be instant so use common sense and don’t expect it to be pristine within a minute. I also used this in combination with their algae treatment and boy does that work great for my turtle tank. Just make sure to scrub everything including your turtles and decor and both treatments will clean up your tank really nice within a day or two. By day three my tank has been clean and it does a better job than my power filter. Before I used the substrate cleaner and algae treatment, I just used water conditioner and a bio filter along with live plants and gravel. The water would smell awful and get cloudy within 2-3 days and I’d have to do complete water changes every week if not twice a week. This is time consuming and takes a lot of effort if you have a big tank. Since I’ve maintained my tank with this stuff I haven’t had to do a single water change or change the bio filter expect for once a month as usual. I’m sure it would last longer but I like to keep a routine. I just add clean water with conditioner to replace the evaporated water. I also use a magnetic algae scraper so the treatment can pull the algae down to the substrate and have the bacteria do its thing. Microbe-Lift products are my new favorite, I like them better than Seachem even.

This product literally saved my outdoor turtle pond. I could not keep the green sludge from overtaking my pond until this. I put it in and 2 days later...clear water!

Not really swayed either way on this, not really sure if it did anything at all. Haven’t noticed much difference using it or not!

At some point this listing was changed from the Fluker's equivalent product, which works well, to this one, which doesn't work at all. The original product was odorless, clear and worked overnight, whereas this is pitch black, reeks of eggs, and doesn't seem to do anything besides turning the water a muddy brown colour for ten hours.I have a 130 gallon turtle tank, so biological waste is a real problem and that can cause algae bloom, or for the water to smell foul if it's not correctly treated. It can even start smelling like a gas leak if waste gets trapped in somewhere you're unable to clean thoroughly. That Fluker's product solved a particularly aggressive case of that overnight. It broke the waste down so that my filters could take care of it and without waste, the algae vanished. When I first started receiving these Microbe-Lift bottles instead via subscribe and save, I took that to mean that the product I was using no longer existed, so I gave this a shot. It's been maybe two months and the water quality is getting progressively worse. This stuff is doing nothing to mitigate it My tank went from transparent clear water to a cloudy, green smelly soup. My turtles seem pretty unhappy about it. One of them is currently refusing to eat.I finally realized looking through my order history, that this wasn't a substitution, but that the listed item had been changed. My old positive review was still up, but it was for a completely different product. The original product that was listed here is now listed elsewhere on Amazon.I suggest rather than trusting the reviews here, you research the products elsewhere before committing to a purchase.

If used fairly regularly, I have had good luck with this product in keeping my turtle tanks clean--better than similar products I have tried.I bought it again because of this success. I don't think any of these types of products is ideal, but if they were, they might harm your pet. Shipped promptly!
