Since very few, if any, PC's or tablets come with CD/DVD drives now that most content is streamed, many of us need an external plug-in reader/player like this, if we want to access old data or movies we have sitting on the shelf. This one of a several seemingly identical drives currently offered for sale by different sellers on Amazon. Despite the photo on this seller's page, the drive I received was branded "Dainty" on the drive tray. Neither the plain white box it came in, nor the label on the device contained a model number or serial number. Software detected the chip as "Initio Corporation INIC-1618L SATA", and the drive within it as a Matsushita BD-MLT UJ240AS(1.11).It is USB powered (no power supply required) which is convenient and adds to the simplicity. It comprises a simple plastic housing around the drive mechanism with a permanently attached USB cable (two plug types, A and C). Without adding to the cost, the textured top surface makes it look quite presentable. I'd say the build quality is fine for occasional use, but if you plan to read/write/burn many disks you might want something more robust. As clearly stated, no software is provided with this external drive. I bought this to use on Ubuntu Linux (22.04), for which software is available for free or low cost. However this requires some expertise and patience to set up. (I can't speak to other OS's)Initially, I was unable to play any content (I received errors telling me I had a wrongly encoded DVD!), even though I could view the files on the disks. I eventually discovered that this was because the drive was set to Region code 2 (China), and my DVDs are Region 1 (USA). After I set the Region code of the drive to 1 using software (Note: this can only be changed a maximum of 4 times) I was able to play content without error.I do not plan to use the burning capability, though it's nice to have, and other than the region code issue, the device works as advertised and is plug-and-play (no drivers required).Summary: Does the job at low cost, but be aware that you may need to reset the Region if you want to play DVDs from outside of China.

After installing this on my 8 month old Dell Precision 7680 Workstation running Win 11 - The window that came up when I tried to run a Blu-Ray said I needed additional software to play a Blu-Ray - After much grumbling I coughed up the $76.81 for the additional software to Cyberlink for their PowerDVD 23 Ultra - It still doesn't work and after a great deal of fooling around with software and settings and trying different Blu-Ray disks I finally threw the player away - JUNK - JUNK - JUNK - Over $120 of JUNK - If I could score this player less than 1 star they would have gotten it - I would love to return it but I'm past my 30 days with all the fooling around trying to make this thing work

You must have appropriate software to use this device. If you do not have the appropriate software it will not work. A lot of software is free online.

After plug in MacBook Air M2 OS14, player makes a clip sound at about one per second. Not recognized by computer. Don't have another computer to test. Return it to Amazon. I guess the firmware is not compatible with OS14..

Handy to have a portable drive that will handle all modern optical media. CD, DVD, and Bluray, including burning CDs, DVDs, and Bluray. I haven't tested each medium, but so far all that I've thrown at it has worked. It does want a little more power than most USB hubs will provide, so you may have to attach it directly to the computer's USB port.

Edit:Okay, I acknowledge the absence of software is clearly stated on the product page--I should have read that more clearly.Perhaps it didn't work for me because it was set to the wrong region, as mentioned in other reviews.Still, I won't be able to get the product to work without software, and I'm too wary of downloading software off the internet (and probably having to spend money on premium versions) to go this route. I've decided to buy a TV-compatible headset so I can use the existing blu-ray player in the house but not bother my family with the volume.Review upgraded to 2 stars because I'm not sure the product is as faulty as I'd thought, but I'm not going to find out for sure. To me, 3 stars would be indicative of an "average" product that does the job with nothing exceptional to boast, and given that some of my difficulties may have been due to an incorrect region setting, I'm inclined to believe the product is still subpar. (As in, possibly a troubleshoot-able issue, but region settings seem like a very basic thing that shouldn't gatekeep people who are not tech-savvy...still feels to me like a product defect.)Original Review:It doesn't come with software installed to read blu-rays. You have to install this separately on your computer. I tried multiple different blu-ray playback apps, and got either a prompt to upgrade to premium or an error message every time. I don't know whether it's the fault of the hardware (this product) or the software (that I installed separately), but apparently blu-rays require some kind of library of security keys to be read, and this was not available to me. I truly don't know if I got a chance faulty item or if the product itself just doesn't work, but I'm starting a return 2 hours after it was delivered after trying and failing to get it to work. I do not recommend.
