At first I was buying cheap testers that died after only a few weeks of use. Sometimes other testers died after plugging then into a cable where the other end was still connected to a switch, not even a PoE port, just a regular active network connection. Sometimes, they just stopped working for no apparent reason...Just checked my Amazon history and I purchased this Fluke unit in April of 2013. So, been using it 9 years now, no issues, still as reliable as the day I bought it. Enough said.

I bought this as I needed to terminate some wires in difficult to access locations. I have not had it too long, but it has worked fine.It correctly identified an intermittant problem. I thought the device was faulty as sometimes it would show three good pairs and sometimes four, but later discovered twisting my newly terminated wire a bit exposed a flaw in my work.It does do a weird thing that I cannot find in the documentation where it cycles a green light through each pair when I press test. It seems to have to do with whether or not a wire is connected before or after it is powered on. If I power on before connecting anything, it seems to work fine.

This is a simple but very effective cable tester which is does great with. Solid design. Doesn't come with a case so purchased the third party case with it which is great. Wanted to do cable tracing with it as well but needed to purchase the Fluke probe as well. Together addresses my cable testing and tracing needs cost effectively.

A must for any data tech. Perfect size. Checks your wire mapping and can trace twisted cable easily using a compatible probe. Most will work I suspect. Best part, easily traces through the cable making cable location a breeze. I use it daily. I love this tool.

Fluke products are always great. I purchased to trace/test a prewire job. Worked great and couldn’t be happier.

You can't go wrong with anything Fluke makes. I would have given this 5 stars if it wasn't $80. I don't mind paying that because the device works well, it tones, it shows miswires and shorts and reversed lines. I got it in December and use it weekly sometimes daily. Absolutely worth it if you have the money to spend. If you are on a budget I would pick up a klein vdv scout pro mapper. Those range from $70ish to $150 for the higher end. The klein has an text-base display and comes with 5 remotes that you can use at the same time.....anyway. This product does exactly what it said. I love fluke stuff, I just feel like this was a little pricey for what it does.

I'm primarily a software guy at work, but I like to tinker with networking at home and as a volunteer at my church. I've always wanted to add a basic network tester to my tool kit. My network guy at work is a big fan of Fluke and he recommended the Micromapper when I asked. He said it would detect all the basic errors I was likely to encounter including the dreaded split pair.My unit arrived with 4 AAA batteries already installed. Unfortunately, the batteries were DOA. I thought it might be the unit itself, but with a set of fresh batteries, the Micromapper fired right up. I used the tester on several cables that I thought were good and they all tested OK.I wanted to see the thing actually find an error so I wired up some mistakes using the wiring diagrams that come on the printed quick start guide and a long hunk of old cat5 I had sitting in the basement. It was pretty easy to create reversed pairs, miswires and opens and the unit correctly identified each mistake. The Micromapper also includes a tone generator and so I purchased the Trendnet analog tone probe . Using my test cable, I practiced toning the cable and finding the best way to probe the cable to get the loudest tone (probe parallel to the cable pointing the probe towards the generator). The two units work very well together even though they're from different vendors. With my new toys, I went to church to test some of the cable runs I had previously installed. I tested the connections for 3 servers and 5 workstations. Everything was clean except one workstation had an open on pair 4/5! I eliminated the patch cables and isolated the fault to the in-wall cable and/or wall jack/patch panel punch downs. I'm going back tomorrow to correct the problem. The bottom line is I now have the tools to quickly validate that both patch cables as well as my in-wall cabling is correctly wired.
