Base is not square. flatness is +.001 the clamps are to big and will not hold in place the locking thumb knob was drilled off center and at an angle so it will not stay tight when using a test indicator.... The good, Its cheap could be used for non precision layout work.... Fowler must be farming out to china and does not care about their brand. I could spend 3 hours and make new parts regrind the surfaces etc. I'm exchanging this unit hoping this is a bad run.... if the next one comes in this condition will not buy Fowler anymore. Fowler folks make a good surface Gage charge 80 or 90 bucks for it and i'll buy one... this is scrape metal and wasted my time measuring and checking it for accuracy and returning it... will probably buy a starrett a $200 dollar ouch but will be happy for life...

Scratched badly on the base and has a rough corner. I plan on contacting amazon and asking for a discount. I can refinish the base for my use but I didn't expect to have to go further than stoning.

Fit and finish just OK. Operation of snugs is poor. Snug holes not sized correctly.More Chinese junk.
