I’ve used this to prepare foamcor boards for pastel painting. Works great! You can vary textural marks by diluting some with water when applying. I only use one coat but some have suggested two or three coats.

This is easy to apply with a spatula or brush and dries quickly. I use it on paper or mat board to create a sandy surface with tooth for pastels. Even one coat gives a good ground. Of course buckling occurs on thinner paper, as would happen using any water media. Some artists recommend painting the back side of the paper with gesso or acrylic paint to help with the buckling issue. I usually apply the ground then just place a weight on the paper until it dries a bit. This ground is also useful to touch up spots on a painting that needs extra tooth or to repair those vegetable-based sanded papers that develop bare spots if even a tiny speck of water gets on them.
