Smooth and creamy. Dreamy greens and browns. Just while swatching I imagined landscapes and still lifes in progress. The colors mix well but I think I'll be using them single as they are pretty on their own. Glad I purchased these.

I am an art teacher and artist. I was looking for more affordable alternatives to the holy grail that is Sennelier. I tried the Mungyo and they were only ok. Too hard for my liking. This set is smooth, soft and creamy. Like lipstick. Color variety is amazing. Great value for the money. Quality product- highly recommend.

What a find! After buying a small set of Sennelier, I've been wanting a large set of extra soft, creamy oil pastels but at an affordable price. This is it!Although I ordered from Amazon, the set arrived from Jerry's Artarama in impressive packaging that kept each oil pastel in place and intact. I immediately tested the colors for blendability, vibrancy, and opaque coverage, all of which the Soho oil pastels do so beautifully, I suspect this will be my go-to set.In another review, someone raised the question of toxicity but got no answer, so I'll probably use cotton rags (mostly old T-shirts I've ripped into varying sizes), Q-tips, or gloved fingers to blend. Palette knives should work very well too. Regardless, I can hardly wait to start playing and see what happens!

These SoHo Extra Soft Pastels present a nice option for casual beginners in painting or sketching. They are softer than inexpensive Pentel pastels but firmer than creamier alternatives like Paul Rubens and pricier Sennelier.Firmer pastels are useful for base layers and drawing control, while softer pastels are better for layering or final highlights. SoHo pastels strike a balance, allowing for decent layering on thinner blended-out block-ins, and layers slightly better than Mungyo’s soft oil pastels. The 48-color set includes 4 extra white sticks, providing a good range of color options. As shown on my color chart, the colors are vibrant, and the sticks mix well for the secondary and tertiary colors at the bottom. Tinting with whites works well for achieving the desired value and intensity, making the extra whites handy. While the lighter colors and reds blend beautifully, the greens tend to cake and gunk up, posing a challenge for smooth blending.Similar to chalky soft pastels, you can achieve greater painting control with a variety of hardness offered under different brands, except without worrying about harmful and messy dust when using oil pastels. Cleanup requires only a towel or toilet tissue, with no need for water or solvents, making these the most convenient painting media that allows for expressive broad strokes. Oil pastels never fully dry, but you can use fixatives for a bit of protection and frame behind glass.SoHo is a brand offered by the well-known art supplier Jerry’s Artarama. The box bears the label “Conforms to ASTM D 4236” and is made in China. While meeting the basic safety standard for child art supplies, the set lacks additional information such as color names or numbers (will not be available open stock), pigment details, or lightfastness ratings. This absence of labeling suggests these pastels will not be archival but serve well as an inexpensive practice medium. While even the very affordable Pentel sticks have both numbering and naming, I am deducting a star due to this and the blending issue with the greens. However, aside from these drawbacks, these pastels present a budget-friendly choice at approximately $0.42 per stick currently and layer better than other inexpensive alternatives.
