Inexpensive but they come pretty dull. They need serious attention to get them usable for wood carving. Also the angel is a bit too steep for good wood carving. If you’re willing to work on them, the steel is reasonable and the handles are quite durable.

They do need to be sharpened to work well. They come with a fairly rough edge but it doesn’t take long to polish them up and once you do they hold 5heir edge very well. The steel is good quality and the handles are comfortable for working by hand or using a mallet on them. Very nice tools for reasonable price.

First off, I am not an expert using gouge chisels, but I have had several occasions that I’ve needed one, so I decided to pick up this set of 4. I have used a lot of flat chisels, so I am familiar with the need of accurate and sharp cutting edges. With ¼”, ½”, ¾” and 1” widths I figure I’d have the bases covered. I pulled out a relatively straight grain piece of white pine to give these a try. All of the chisels except one was sharp and made nice convex and concave cuts. The ¼” gouge wasn’t sharp and the curve of the blade was imperfect. The back end of the ground edge is nicely curved but the actual cutting surface looks more like a wedge than a curve. I’ll have to do some studying on how to sharpen these and maybe I can salvage the 1/4” tool.

Part of the edges on the set I got were visibly FLAT, with the largest sizes being the worst... Perhaps they were worried that if the chisels were actually sharp they might cut into the thin plastic edge protectors...I tried them on a couple pieces of random wood out of our scrap bin, I think one was oak and the other ash, and they did a semi tolerable job on the ash, but not very good on the oak...Possibly they would be better if sharpened but I expect cutting tools to be sharp enough to use out of the box....I also noticed that the end ferrules did not come off, but they were pretty loose and rotated freely on the handles...Definitely UNDERWHELMED....

This set of 4-pieces of semi-circular Cr-V carving chisels range in width from 1/4", 1/2", 3/4" and 1" and each is labeled as such on the rounded metal bottom. The overall length of each is 9-1/2" and the wood handles are about 1" wide and a little over 3/4" in height. The handles are light, but overall, the chisels are fairly balanced. I wish the handles were 1/2" to 1" longer to fit my hand just a little more for leverage on doing straight on work, but the handles are still comfortable and easy to hold. But the chisel handle is fine for holding in my left hand perpendicularly and using a mallet in my right hand to tap it. The metal ring at the top rotates slightly but does not come off and will probably tighten with use as the top fibers are crushed down from mallet use.The chisels have a thin red plastic tab to protect the cutting edge that can also be used for storage when not in use. The rounded surfaces are nicely machined and formed. The top edges are evenly ground flat. Both of these factor into a good starting cutting edge on each. There were no loose burrs. They are certainly not the most sharpened chisels, but they are relatively easy to sharpen without too much trouble as they have been ground nicely. Before sharpening, the roughness of the bottom surface and the cutting edge could be felt, but it took relatively little effort to fine tune them for use. In fact, the top inner curve is the hardest part to deal with, but it came much smoother than the bottom and needed relatively little polishing or touchup. After sharpening, these chisels performed to my expectations on both the basswood and maple that I used them on. The edge holds it sharpness pretty well. They round outside shapes nicely and carve grooves decently. I am happy with their performance for their value.

To be honest, I’ve used flat chisels before but never rounded ones, so I’m going to preface my review with this information. Having said that, I do know when a chisel is sharp enough to do what it’s intended to do - cut through wood. And this set of four chisels is definitely not sharp enough. So before I can even move forward in any additional assessment of the set, I’ll need to figure out how to sharpen them. The handles, though, don’t seem to be finished. I feel as though I’m going to get a splinter from any one of them. Not a good way to start off after receiving a new product. I’m decidedly unimpressed.

These were... not great out of the box. They were fairly dull and made it difficult to work on the pieces I needed to. However a quick run on the bench grinder/sander and I was able to sharpen these up to make them serviceable. Their solidly built, but their factory edge leave a lot to be desired.

I did not expect anything exceptional considering the price and so these are what they are - a low value product for a low cost. I don't have very much to say about them because what I also did not expect or understand is that these are not a "ready-to-use" product. While they are not optimal for me as a casual user, if you know and understand what you are getting, these may meet your needs just fine. No comment or recommendation because these were simply out of my realm in assessing. I can only leave you with the suggestion to read carefully and consider if these are what you are looking for.
