I was so exited to get this and begin fixing my landscape edging. Nope. It is so blunt it is like trying to push a huge spoon into the ground. I did not think about it not having teeth when I purchased. I am returning.

If you have soft soil I expect it will work as expected. Its primary fault is that is simply is not the least bit sharp. Unfortunately for me, my soil is clay, and it will not penetrate more than 1/2 inch into the ground, and that's with my full weight (182 pounds) on it. I've ordered a steel file to see if I can improve the edge. If not, I've bought two products for nothing.

I've had an edger of this type for many years - it is the one on the left of photo 1. I have always disliked that I had to use the old one with my foot in line with the edge I'm creating or dressing. I prefer the new one that lets me cut at 90 degrees to my foot position. I suspect I'm in the minority but that position seems more natural to me. With this consideration being the most important to me, the new one is great. There is one difference that will be a concern over the life of the tool. My first edger was hardened steel that I could sharpen on a grinder or with a file. This one is a different metal and I think it may be difficult to sharpen. I'm going to wait until it needs sharpening before I try.An improvement that would involve a price increase would be the addition of a different length middle piece or altering the design so the height of the tool could be adjusted. My wife is much shorter than me and the handle is too tall for her.My last comment concerns manufacturing quality. One of the handle section holes was mis-aligned to the extent that the bolt wouldn't go through the handle tube. The last photo shows how far off. I drilled it out to fix it. Some people may not have the tools to do this.

I wondered how much pressure it could take before warping or bending. I immediately believed it was a mistake on my behalf when I saw the box. To my surprise, this tool has, thus far, impressed me. I have a reputation for ruining garden tools. Simply said, things aren't made like they used to. About this specific edging tool, I'm open to being proven wrong. It will be delivered in three sections. All steel parts include notched grooves that fit into each other, and screws are also included for insertion into the holes after proper alignment. No shifting, slipping or twisting components. Just a reliable fit that you can use. By providing a location to set your foot so you can apply more force with your weight, the edger's lip helps you insert it into the hard ground.I can push and pull the tool out of the ground by using the handles to obtain a firm grasp on it. As I am only 5'2", the height is ideal for me to put it into the ground. The beveled edger plate also creates air pockets that make it easier to take out of the earth. I've used power edgers before, but I'd much rather power this instrument myself so that it produces precise work.
