We live full time in our motor home in a Central Florida where the water is notoriously hard. We have an On the Go portable water softener which needs to be regenerated about every two months. The Water Works strips (50 to a bottle) help us determine when to regenerate. The strips test calcium and magnesium hardness from 0-1000 ppm.The bottle also describes the effects of hard water at various ppm readings. The testing process is simple:1. Dip one strip into a water sample for 3 seconds without motion.2. Remove strip3. Immediately match to the color chart on the bottle within 1 minute.A diagram illustrates the process. After regeneration, the water will read 0 ppm. Over time, as the hardness increases, the color on the chart will increase. We typically regenerate when the strip reads 250.We trust Water Works strips to indicate when to regenerate our system.

Have used the product about 5 times before writing this review. Hey, it works as advertised and meets my need to know when the water is getting harder. Yes, I know I should be able to tell the change in hardness while I am using the water. But, for me, the gradual change in hardness is barely noticeable. Until the water is pushing 250+ in the hardness range. I like the product and the price. Will purchase again.

I used these test strips to test my new water softener, and plan to check the water every few months. I learned from the test strips and information I read that I had the water softener set too high, and that the water was too soft. I dialed the hardness setting back on the water softener, and the water still reads "soft", but the softener uses less salt, and the water is MUCH more comfortable to the skin. I guess if it's too soft, the pH gets low, alkaline, which can be corrosive to pipes and water heaters, and irritating (too drying) to the skin and hair. It makes a BIG difference. I think these strips are a great product for checking "hard" source water, and the "soft" treated water, not just to make sure the water softener is working, but to make sure you don't have it set too high. I was able to set my softener at a lower setting, and water still reads as "soft", and our skin and hair are not too dry. These strips could not be easier to use. Just dip for 3 seconds, and color match to determine the hardness of the water being tested. The instructions, hardness color chart, and hardness recommendations are all on the bottle.
