Getting an idea of how hot a cooking surface on my fire pit or grill wasn't as tricky as my flattop. I was able to see huge temperature differences depending on the location. The front has about 33% difference then the middle and the side start to taper. I also found the range of temperature between high and low which wasn't as big a gap as I thought. I've also started using it with my fire pit. I have a cooking surface on it that I've gauged by how long I can keep my hand there but this is much more accurate.Another good use for this thermometer is insulation temperature. Finding cold spots and addressing it. It has a lot of functions and a great tool to have for anyone. Easy to use and easier to read.

Turns off after 15 seconds of no use. Has made me an expert in heating oils on carbon steel and cast iron so eggs don't stick. Around 375 is the magic number. Extra virgin olive oil doesn't smoke at this temp. Usually once i get 350 i start taking the eggs out and do my break and place on pan routine. Haven't had a stuck egg since I got this. It has two modes and i get the same numbers when i use them on a hot pan. when using on pans you have to move it around because you get different numbers, but you generally get the sense of where the whole pan is at what temperature.

I remember the first time I ever heard of an infrared thermometer. It sounded like science fiction--but such PRACTICAL science fiction (gathering the surface temperature of basking rattlesnakes in the wild). I, thankfully, have no need to take a snake's temperature, but I do have plenty of other things this thermometer will conveniently provide the temperature of from a safe distance. It comes with a 9-volt battery, a welcome surprise. The built-in laser pointer is a practical addition. The housing for the unit, however, is flimsy, brittle plastic. For that, I deducted a star. I foresee a few wraps of electrical tape in its future. (I'm careful but clumsy. It's inevitably going to suffer at my hands.)In spite of the housing, this is a nice infrared thermometer at a reasonable price. I recommend.

I ordered this thermometer for my husband, and he loves it! It seems to be very accurate and it's super easy to use! It's well made, and I love the fact that it has a laser pointer for preciseness. I also love that it comes with a 9V battery! My only call out on this item, which isn't necessarily a negative, is that it's made in China. Although the listing itself doesn't state that it's made in the USA, the logo on the side of the thermometer says American made because this brand's other items are made in America. It makes sense that this wouldn't be, but I will say that it is a little misleading. Overall, we are happy with this item and would absolutely recommend it!

I got the Appalachian Infrared Thermometer Gun to add to my camping kitchen and have been having fun zapping things.I roasted a pork loin in a cast iron pot that had a pop up thermometer that would pop up at 160 degrees. When it popped up, I checked it with the Thermometer Gun and it read 160 degrees, but by the time I got the camera it dropped to 153.6 degrees. Thats pretty accurate.I pointed it at a propane heater and got an OH reading which I assume is an Over Heat error. I checked a couple of other spots including a propane coffee maker. All the readings seemed accurate. The Thermometer Gun comes with pretty detailed instructions so you may have to keep them around until you get used to it. It would have been nice if the instructions were printed on the body of the gun and for that reason it lost a star.Goof value for the money, comes with a 9 volt battery.I don't have to guess if the steaks medium rare.
