Absolutely amazing quality "for the price". It is nowhere near a real hand forged katana from a swordsmith but for this price point you cannot complain.PROS:1. SHARP!!!2. Beautiful all black blade and scabbard3. Absolutely SHARP AF, be very very careful with this. It will certainly slice through bamboo or melons with ease. This is not a toy and must be respected even though doesn't really fall into a "real" Katana category.4. PRICE, absolutely no complaints at this price point, weight, balance, sharpness, simplistic design, hamon etc... gorgeous and great for collectorsCONS:1. Lacking in the "art" of more traditional Katana2. Can be dangerous if not handled properly (but that comes with the territory)3. Scabbard could be a bit higher quality, glossy black coating but once again you cannot complain at this price.4. Comes in a box which has graphics showing what is inside, I wish amazon put one of their boxes for privacy.PROS outweigh the Cons by a large margin.5/5 Stars for what you pay, if you like the black/black style this thing is absolutely amazing and Ill be adding the Wakizashi from the same brand very shortly.

I was looking at Katanas for a long time, always was interested but didn’t know where to buy.Amazon wasn’t my first choice but I seen this katana and thought it looked great,So I gave it a shot.Wow, I couldn’t have been more happy with it.It feels very premium even at the $150 price point, for a decorative piece, it looks incredible. Not to mention the Katana itself was mint!Definitely will be buying another one in the future.

Very sharp and has pretty good weight. Used on my backyard shrubbery and it cuts very clean. Price is great for what it is. Great collector items as well.

Can’t say anything bad about this sword. I didn’t take it apart yet but the blade seems full tang and spring steel, it’s very sharp but not smoothly sharp little choppy but it’s 70$. Fittings are to be expected that gold mall looking stuff . And the tsuka has fake ray skin and it’s not even wrapped all the way around, just two strips . The wrap is kinda slick but it does have a very thing profile which is nice for grip. Scabbard is actually really cool looking and well fitted. I don’t like the kanji characters on there since it could say dumb American thinks he samurai or whatever and I wouldn’t know . Sword makers no one wants junk on the blade except the maker marks on the hilt part that’s covered . Also no one wants these dumb dragon super mall ornate decorations , people want plane since the cheesier you make it look the cheesier it likely will be . But not a bad deal for price and there is a blood ridge on it which is nice but no hamon( modern sword making doesn’t require one though as it doesn’t add to anything but looks of the blade in this day in age . )if in doubt buy it you’ll probably like it or just spend 40$ more and get something from a well known forge.

For the price, I have to say that this sword is pretty great. The cons:The wrap could be tighter on the handle. The Menuki are shown as gold in colour, but in reality it's the same metal as the other fittings: some sort of probably zinc alloy. Shiny, but probably wouldn't survive actual combat. The transition between the wrap and the Fuchi is so-so, with some gaps showing. There is no visible Hamon that I can see under any of the lighting options I have available. Fit in the saya is ok but not great, with it being a little tight right at the mouth. The pros:The sword is nicely balanced and quite light. Moves well and everything is assembled tight. No rattles or anything loose. The blade is SHARP out of the box. Paper-cutting sharp. There is no secondary bevel, just a smooth taper to a very fine edge.I can't speak to the durability since I won't be cutting anything past paper with it for the time being, and really there's no way to know what steel this is made of. This model is no longer listed on the manufacturer's site, so it could be (and probably is 1060, and if so, and if it was properly heat treated, it should be a relatively tough blade. The lack of Hamon may indicate that it was through-hardened.All in all, for $130 you get an apparently functional katana that looks nice enough to display (I didn't mention it, but I really like the saya design), and it might just be made of a good enough steel to be useable in a pinch. You could do worse.

I recently purchased what I expected would be an acceptable katana for kata practice and forms development. I was exceptionally surprised by the quality that I recieved with this katana. It is well made, beautiful, and strong. I was not looking for a katana that sliced thru bottles or anything else such as katame rolls or bottles, but this little beast came thru all of it, When practicing it looks amazing, swings with power and grace, and makes me look practiced and polished. One concern that others have made here is the overall hefty weight of this katana. Yes, it IS a bit on the heavy side, but since most of my practice is done with a Subarito rather than a standard bokken, the wieght is both managable and comfortable for my use. Using the subarito is a distinct advantage is acclimating to a wieghtier katana. No speed is sacrificed by the wieght, and the heft seems to provide even more power to my swing.

High quality and under $100. I’m very happy with it. It’s a beautiful Katana. I will definitely get more JIHPEN swords.Came with a stand. I didn’t know it would come with a stand. It was very well packed when it arrived. Feels good in the hands. Good balance. Sharp and beautiful. I am pleased 😃

Ill preface this by saying I am very impressed with the quality delivered at this price. Blade is straight, all fittings are tight, has good balance and weight. Basically everything was as advertised. It came packaged well, oiled blade. Now, it wasnt sharp enough out of the box to slice paper; it tore the paper. But, took it out in the yard to do some chopping and it handled fruit very well, super clean cuts when swinging full speed. I did give a piece of plastic a few hits and the blade did not chip or roll. Didnt have anything like mats or bamboo to test it on just yet.But as other reviews stated, at this price, youre really only looking for a training blade, so razor sharp might not be the best to start with anyway. But an experienced swordsman should be able to finish sharpening it.I bought this particular one because of the other positive reviews, and I agree with them: great entry level sword, it should hold up to some abuse, and its built in a way to allow dissembling and maintenance, unlike many others at this price.I am happy with my purchase!

Okay, I am just going to review this #2 long blade sold to me by Jihpensword and leave the 'nonexistent-over seas-customer service' out of it (because it sucks) so yeah, let's just talk about this unusual take on a 'Japanese katana': Firstly, it's not a true katana. A true katana has a graceful (and highly lethal) curve in the blade made to slice as it cuts. This #2 (who calls a blade style "#2" anyway?) is more like a sirasaya or one of the other straight blade variants (don't get me wrong, cuz I love the straight blades too.. I own two different straight blades myself) but this #2 is somebody's artistic take on a piece of very flexible magnesium. Second of all the spine is almost too thin..almost. But even though it would probably warp if misused, the cutting edge can be (with a little fine tuning) brought to a seriously razor-like edge. I'm talking crazy sharp! The magnesium is much easier to sharpen than some of the harder, higher carbon blades, and will hold a keen edge -providing that one doesn't go chopping and hacking on a bunch of stupid s***. So basically, don't mistreat this somewhat fragile blade, and you'll have a real razor here. Now, the etching? Not sure how this was accomplished, laser or some kind of high speed dremel bit, I assume, then the etching is filled with some kind of thick gunky stuff (probably oil thats been used in the quenching process) it is cool looking, but unless you use solvent and clean it out of there your cleaning rag will come away filthy EVERY time you clean the blade no matter how many times you repeat the process. It's not actual paint that dries and stays there like, well, paint. The manuki is a decent quality leather that also looks pretty cool providing a nice grip. The grip is a bit too short for a proper two handed grip for a full grown man, but the weapon is light enough to easily be wielded one handed or for peeps that are small of stature. And the saya (the scabbard) is wrapped in faux ray skin.. looks really nice (but no, it's not 'real' ray hide removed from an actual aquatic creature. The vegans and AR groups would have a conniption fit and 'woke' us all to death in our sleep if we actually utilised an animals skin. So... is this '#2' worth a hundred bucks? Yes; for beginners that want to start trying to get serious, absolutely. Would I recommend this long blade from Jihpensword? Um.. it costs $100. Would I go to actual war with this weapon? Nope. But all in all, be careful with it.. And for all the newbie ninjas? be very careful because this blade will make you brake out in stitches! literally. Jus' sayin'

JIHPEN Sword - 1045/1060 High Carbon Steel - Black Legend Model- $150 CDNI Bought this sword for my son to begin practicing Iaido, bearing in mind that as a first Japanese style sword our expectations were in line with the price point.(For those who feel a $150 sword should have the same attributes as a $500 + dollar sword, this review or likely sword, is certainly not for you.)As shown in the photos, within a couple of weeks the Tsuka-Ito (Wrap) began to loosen. I expected this at the time of purchase.A person needs to keep in mind, that for $150 CDN you are not purchasing a high end artisan crafted Katana, this is an entry level item. Brought to people at an excellent price.Upon first receiving the sword, I considered it a Good quality item. The fittings were tight and the Saya (Scabbard) was in beautiful condition.New, it had just the right pressure to keep the blade in place. However, this to became a little loose after a couple of weeks of repetitive drawing practice. This was easily corrected with a little epoxy and some sanding to re-adjust the tension of the fit.The Blade was almost perfectly straight (again keep realistic with the price point) and was close to sharp - site says "razor sharp" but it is not. Close enough to finish if you wanted it that sharp though. From a safety perspective, for beginners, I personally believe that an entry level sword like this should not be any sharper than as shipped. If you have the experience to handle a razor sharp weapon, you should also be capable of making it so. We actually dulled the edge considerably to make it safe to train with.(Another reason that I appreciated the value of this sword - I would cry to dull a high end sword to make it trainable.)Note: We did not want an alloy Iaito blade, as we wanted the true weight of a steel blade.Point of balance from the manufacturer is 5" forward of the Tsuka (guard). In the attached photos, during the process of re-wrapping with a Cotton Tsuka-Ito, Addition of Hishigami-Ito and Kusune to provide a tighter more secure grip, the internal components of the sword construction are shown. The fittings around the Tsuba (Guard) were tight, as was the fit of the Keshira (Pommel on end of the Hilt). The 3/4 Tang matches the sword shape, and the quenching of the steel is visible. It was clean with no rust. The holes for the Mekugi were drilled with the handle in place.Disassembly of the Tsuba was straight forward, as was the removal of the Mekugi (Bamboo Pegs) - Photos showing the direction of the Tapper on the Pegs for removal. There was a Spacer (Green Plastic Strip) added to the Tang to take up space inside the Tsuba (Handle), though this worked well for it’s purpose. After re-wrapping of the Tsuka, reassembly of the sword components was also straight forward, and the Mekugi re-inserted with good tension.(I will note, after completing the new handle wrap, I have a new respect for the craftspeople who make this their profession. My wrapping skills most certainly need work.)Would recommend this sword to others looking for an affordable option to enjoy the Japanese sword. And as a learning platform to learn more about sword craft as well.I thank the craftspeople who build these swords for JIPHEN for a great product that met all my son’s needs. Granted with a few upgrades, but like all things, learning to maintain something deepens one’s appreciation and connection with the object. This, to me, is part of what makes the sword special.Hopefully this review will give something for others to think about when looking at the many options out there for swords in this price range.I would certainly purchase a JIPHEN sword again.
