My son loves music (listen, creating, and playing), so this seemed like a great project for us to use to bridge the gap between music and tech education. We had a lot of fun working on it together and I feel like he really learned some new information and a usable skill. The final product is really neat, works well, and sounds way better than either of us had been prepared for. I am really happy with how everything turned out and highly recommend this to other tech parents who want to teach younger musicians or tech enthusiasts a new skill.

Iโm teaching my kids how to solder, and they are also musicians, so this kit is perfect! Unfortunately, we havenโt built it yet, but all the parts are present, the instructions look good, and the quality of the board looks good. Itโs not really different than any other soldering kit. The microchip is a DIP package, but doesnโt come with a socket (Iโll use a socket when I build this), although I assume itโs pre-programmed. Almost all the parts are through-hole, with the only surface soldering being the charging module and battery (and the pads are big โ no worries). Iโll give it a presumptive 5 stars, and update with pictures and video after itโs built.

I ordered this Electronic Kalimba Thumb Piano DIY Soldering Practice Kit so that I could get in some quick practice soldering before tackling a substantially more complicated kit.I used to assemble all sorts of electonic devices, but it's been at least thirty years since I assembled my last kit. I'm about to start working on a transceiver kit that requires a lot of soldering and I wanted a kit that I could use to work on my rusty soldering skills. This kit met my expectations. If you have never soldered before, this kit will be challenging for you. There are a number of components that will be damaged if too much heat is applied. You really do need to get "in and out" quickly with your soldering iron to prevent that from happening, particularly with the integrated circuit and transistor. You also will need to get all of the switches properly aligned and seated before soldering them to the board. If not, the kalimba will be hard to play.So how does it sound? Well, not like a kalimba. The sound is electronic in nature. It has much of the feel of a kalimba, but the sound is quite different. Part of the overall mediocre sound is the result of the small transducer that is included in the kit. Using a larger speaker would most likely improve the sound but you would need to modify the kit and, most likely, purchase additional parts to get that done.If you are looking for an electronic kalimba that has an authentic sound, this kit will most likely disappoint you. If you just want the challenge of building an electronic device, though, you should enjoy this kit.

This soldering practice kit is very easy to complete. The instructions on this could be better, but it's certainly more than doable as there are only a few different components to solder onto the board. One thing that the manufacturer has left off from the instructions is that the user can use the included standoff screws and bolts to make it more safer to handle and play with the instrument once the soldering job is finished. To sum up, it's one of the more "functional" practice kits out there, ones that actually aren't immediately retired to the user's desk drawer as soon as they are completed. I'd highly recommend it for beginners to slightly skilled in soldering. 5 out of 5 stars on value and novelty. Use solder with more lead content to make the experience easier and more enjoyable.
