WINDING AND SPINNING THE TROMPO TOP

The String - Each top is different and requires a certain length of string to spin correctly. We suggest that you begin with a string that is about shoulder to floor length. The string should be knotted at each end.

Winding the Top

Hold the top in your left hand with the tip down. Place the knotted end of the string under your left thumb with about 3/4 inch of string protruding past the crown. Wind a single loop of string around the top's crown and over the knot. Pull the string firmly over the knot, catching it and forming a "V". Keeping the string tight, turn the tip of the top to the right, pull the string down to the tip, and wind away from you. Keep a steady tension on the string as you wind and layer the string smoothly toward the crown.

Spinning the Top

Hold the top in the palm of your throwing hand with the button behind and between your middle fingers. Keep the point of the top aimed up at all times. --Throw the top with a smooth side-arm motion at a spot 3 or 4 feet away. Do not pull back on the string. The top will unwind and turn over as it travels down the string and land spinning. --If the top does not spin straight the first time, do not get discouraged. Try various lengths of the string and move the throw point in or out to fine tune. Each top is different and may take several adjustments to spin true. Good top spinning takes practice and consistency of throw. Caution - Your spinning top has a small tip made of a metal rivet. Recommended for ages 12+

It has a short blunted metal tip to spin on and comes with a short cord to spin the top with. The top is a bit slick with a shiny finish but if you scuff it up a bit (like I do with all my trompos) the cord grabs just right. It's a beautiful little top.

The flange at the bottom was too small to retain the cord. The top was absolutely unusable as delivered. I had to find washers and glue them on, I bought these for my Grandchildren because I had many such tops when I was a young Boy 70 years ago and I thought they might like them. Slick sides, poor flange design, waste of money. Shelf art only!

...by my father-in-law. My father-in-law was born/raised in Mexico. He would often tell us stories of the toys he would play with. My wife thought it would be great to give him a piece of his childhood for Christmas. Even I was surprised at how happy he was to receive his trompo. Now when we go visit, he is often showing our kids new tricks he has figured out he can do with his top. Great buy!

I bought this for my niece for Christmas. She lives in a European country where this toy is called "peonza" and they have only in plastic. I will update my review after she tries it. It is a bit heavy so I am not sure how well it can spin. We will see.And I did not receive the one on the photo but a different color. Just so you know.
