Why Midori Spring Hojicha?

what is Hojicha

What is Hojicha?

It's like Matcha, but roasted for a smooth, rich flavor. Some say it’s a great coffee alternative — what we do know is that it’s made from the finest leaves in Shizuoka, Japan, with a touch of natural energy and a lighter caffeine kick.

Roasted Green Tea

It's in the roast

The leaves are processed at about 200 degrees C until it turns brown. Our Roasting Master ensures our color, hue and taste is as consistent as clockwork. This precision yields a deeply rich brown hue, and not a light pale color.

Garden picking tea

1st harvest picking

Unlike others, we only use premium, early crop leaves. We first handpick the smaller leaves from the our yearly prime harvest, then blend and roast the tea leaves to exact specifications, expertly matching color and adjusting roasting conditions to account for varying factors like temperature and humidity throughout the year.

Hojicha benefits

Lower caffeine, more antioxidants and calm

Heating green tea leaves to about 200 make Hojicha (houjicha) significantly lowers its caffeine content, as heat breaks down caffeine molecules. This makes it an ideal, gentler choice for evening consumption. Besides reducing caffeine, roasting also enriches the tea with a unique smoky flavor and retains its beneficial antioxidants, offering a soothing and distinctive tea experience.

We believe stone and micro-ground powders are superior to loose leaf. These selections aren't just for desserts- they're curated for exploration and enjoyment, challenging the ordinary.

Hojicha Brew

Making Hojicha is easy. Use about 1 tsp of powder to start. Add hot water (80-90 C) to your strength level, and whisk!

Frequently Asked Questions

Hojicha Powder

Q. Does Hojicha contain caffeine?

Hojicha is known for its lower caffeine content, making it a favorite for those looking to reduce their intake without giving up the richness of a good brew. Because of the roasting process, on average, a cup of Hojicha contains about 7.7 mg of caffeine. In comparison, Matcha, which is made from the entire tea leaf, has a higher caffeine concentration, typically around 35-70 mg per cup. Meanwhile, a standard cup of coffee can range significantly but averages about 95 mg of caffeine. So if you're looking for a gentler lift, Hojicha is an excellent choice with just enough to keep you going without the buzz.

Q. My powders won't dissolve, am I doing something wrong?

Don't worry, you're not doing anything wrong - Fine ground tea powders actually do not dissolve completely. Matcha, Hojicha, and most microgrounds become suspended in water when whisked. Green Tea powder is made from shade-grown tea leaves ground into very fine powder. It doesn't dissolve like sugar or powdered milk. You will always find Matcha powder settle at the bottom of your chawan or cup if you leave your tea for too long. There are some tips to make a perfect Matcha tea brew here. Many of the popular branded "Matcha" lattes are prepared with lots of sugar, milk powder, and not pure Matcha. Give your mug a swirl when you almost reach the bottom or add a little bit of water.

Q. Is Midori Spring Hoji tested for toxins and heavy metals?

Yes our tea powders are carefully tested throughout the year to ensure quality and purity.

This was my first time trying hojicha and I loved this brand! It has a nice nutty flavor and doesn’t taste overly roasted. Really great quality and good value. Easily to access which is awesome. Would definitely buy again!

I have tried many hojicha powders here and in Japan and this is great. It is just as good as Rishi Tea’s version.I highly recommend putting the powder through a sift before using it.For temperature, 175F and 170F have give the best results (as long as I mix it in a pre warmed bowl/cup)

I wasn't sure what to expect. Drinking matcha makes me sick so I put it in my smoothy daily to get the benefits. This was a pleasant surprise.

I love this hojicha! My lattes taste just as good—if not better—than the ones from cafes. It’s rich, nutty, and creamy, and it blends super smoothly. Plus, as someone who’s pregnant, I really appreciate that it’s organically sourced and tested for heavy metals.

I was skeptical because some reviews said it was over-roasted or that there was a weird aftertaste or some fishy odor. I'm happy to say that I did not experience any of that! The flavors are very mellow, kind of nutty, with a slight roasted flavor. If you're a fan of stronger flavors, this might not be for you since it's on the lighter side. Perfect for beginners who are trying out matcha/hojicha though! It comes in a pretty big canister too, so this will last you a while!

One of my fave hojicha brand that I could just easily get from Amazon, just mindblowing how they could just increase the price by 20% in just couple months since I last ordered it.

The roasted flavours of this hojicha powder is incredibly smooth and well-balanced, offering a toasty, nutty taste that’s perfect for a calm, relaxing tea break. It’s less grassy compared to traditional green tea, which I personally prefer, and the flavours is deep without being overpowering. One of the things I appreciate the most is the low caffeine content, making it an ideal choice for evening sipping without the worry of staying awake. It has quickly become my go-to drink when I want something warm but not too stimulating. The powder dissolves easily, and I love that you can enjoy it both hot or cold, depending on your mood. The fact that it’s USDA certified organic, non-GMO, and vegan also gives me peace of mind about the quality and sourcing of the product. You can tell it’s crafted with care.Whether you’re already a fan of hojicha or new to it, this product is a must-try for anyone looking for a soothing, delicious tea with a rich roasted flavour. Highly recommended!

…. I was really pleased to be offered this powder to try. I love trying different and healthy drinks and foods.Unfortunately though I am unable to review it properly. This is because as I went to make some, I’d taken the lid off of the jar that I had decanted the powder into, only to drop the blinking jar……powder - and smashed glass - everywhere on the floor!!.I can tell you the air was proper blue…..for quite a while 🤣The tin is good quality though, the powder looks good…..it’s just that I did not get to taste it!I would order it again though and happy to recommend based on what I did experience with it……..

This is one of the first few tea powders I've ever tried, and this tastes great. It's rich, tasty, and fragrant. I don't know why the product listing lists matcha as flavors and such, it certainly isn't. It has many uses. I'd take away one star for the fact that it's quite expensive, unfortunately.

I usually drink my tea as loose leaf with the leaves not grounded up into a powder. I have tried hojicha from Japan that has a strong nutty flavor from the roasting and this hojicha powder is not of the same caliber. The flavor of this hojicha is a lot weaker in comparison and this tea does not carry the same notes of nuttiness as the whole leaf hojicha I've had.The powder version of hojicha is unique to me as it is usually unroasted green tea (matcha) that comes in powder form. This being a powder allows a chasen to be used to whisk the tea, aerating it to create froth and foam resemblant to matcha tea. However, I do enjoy the unroasted green tea matcha more than this roasted tea so I will not be getting this again.

If you want to be hit over the head with a roasted flavor, get this hojicha powder. But if you actually want to be able to enjoy the incredible flavors of hojicha powder, look elsewhere. It’s a shame I can’t return this item.
