Cherne Gripper Mechanical Plugs are ideal for plumbing system tests. They're easy to install with an extra-large wing nut. The inside of the pipe seals inside pipe as far as needed. Plugs are made with glass-reinforced ABS plastic. End-of-pipe seals only at the end of a pipe, preventing plug from falling into stack.

It does what it is supposed to do, cap off the pipe! My sewer clean out cap was broken, this was a quick and easy fix

I purchased this test plug 4 months ago and have had no issues. I'm using it to seal a homemade rock tumbler made from a 6" PVC pipe. To reduce noise and lengthen life I have fully coated the inside surface with clear silicone II. It also keeps the bolt from rusting, as other reviewers have commented, and keeps the bolt from falling into the barrel when I have to remove the top to pry the rubber from the edge of the pipe (actually a few taps with a hammer does it). I'm not sure how much pressure this is designed to handle but it hasn't blown out yet and I have had problems with the metal style plugs in this regard, making a serious mess. I have now purchased two more for additional barrels.

Used it to plug a yard drain pipe. Works great. The ditch the pipe dumps into was backing up due to a plugged culvert. Using this until the culvert is repaired

It was easy to fit into the old concrete cleanout in my basement. The tightness of the seal can be perfectly adjusted so it doesn’t crack the concrete pipe.

They may keep air in but a little rain and my 4" and 6" plugs didn't keep water out. Have not used them for pressurizing pipe so I cannot comment on how well they hold pressure. They have their purpose. Bought them as a test for a project and they didn't perform well for my application but this does not mean I am calling them junk. The product overall is well made, heavy duty and looks durable. They clamp down tightly and when I tested on a sliced pipe the seal appeared to contact all the way around the inside circumference.
