Oatey® Purple Primer/Cleaner is a dual purpose primer and cleaner for use on all schedules and classes of CPVC and PVC pipe and fittings. It removes contaminants such as surface dirt, grease and grime. Its purple tint provides visible verification that a primer has been used, which is ideal for areas where plumbing code require this proof. It also applies easily with included in-lid dauber. Purple-tinted all purpose primer/cleaner for PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings. Removes surface dirt, grease and grime as well as softens pipe in preparation for solvent cement. Purple tint for verification for code. Apply at temperatures 40 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

When working pvc pipe it used to be that inspectors liked to see a little purple on the joints. But also it does make the surface more ready for the glue in my opinion. You get a good job.

If you are not required to use the primer in your city DO NOT USE IT. Once you or one of your journeymen get it in your eyes you will understand. Never never use it above floor level and never on a ladder. It is so thin it can be controlled. There is no data that proves you will have a stronger joint. Unfortunately it is now baked into codes.
