This full set of Passione violin strings 4/4 from Pirastro are medium gauge, and offer a big and powerful sound. The sheep gut core of the Passione violin strings is manufactured, wound and polished in the traditional way - by hand. The core sound is full, round and warm and has a complex overtone spectrum causing brilliance and clarity and a great power of projection. Passione strings possess a fascinating diversity of sounds, which allows musicians to alter their tone as desired. These violin strings offer very easy response on all levels of the dynamic range. The accuracy of the contact point is easily manageable, and they boast a significantly reduced playing-in time: Passione strings are immediately playable, unlike some other gut strings. Altering the gauge by 1/4 PM changes the tension by 3%. For some time, a new trend evolved, especially amongst young classical violinists who search for a full and complex sound, to start experimenting with violin strings with a gut core. Pirastro has now picked up this trend and developed the Passione violin string line. E string: Ball end / Silvery Steel A string: Ball end / Aluminium Winding - Gut Core D string: Ball end / Silver Winding - Gut Core G string: Ball end / Silver Winding - Gut Core Special Features The length of coloured silk at the peg end of the Passione G-string is different than the length of the A- and D- strings. This has been designed intentionally and is part of the construction of the G-string. The special length of the G-string’s colour winding at the peg end prevents the string from breaking in the peg box. At the latest after two to three days the stretching process will be finalized. As a result the silk winding will no longer reach over the nut. We have made numerous tests with this special G on various violins all differing in size and the string has always fitted. On some violins it takes longer, with other violins the string even fits from the beginning. About Pirastro strings: Because of the quality of both their strings and rosin, Pirastro has become the byword for a sound which is both beautiful and dependable. As a result, a great number of string musicians play and recommend Pirastro strings. With their tonal flexibility and expressive power, Pirastro strings have inspired musicians to create their own unique sound by taking full advantage of their instruments best qualities. Each individual string in the Pirastro line has been meticulously crafted to provide musicians with an unsurpassed choice in tonal colours. Musicians can choose from the complete range of gut strings (e.g. Passione and Oliv) to synthetic strings (such as Evah Pirazzi and Tonica) or steel (e.g. Flexocor and Chromcor). Finally, Pirastro rosins are designed specifically for use with Pirastro strings and this combination is responsible, in no small part, for the excellent world-renowned Pirastro sound.

I’m a long time fan of evah pirazzi’s and have used them on both my violin (except e string) and viola for years. As a violist I’ve always loved a warm rich sound on my violin and I also play quite a bit of baroque music so I thought I’d finally dip my toe into the synthetic gut string world. After a bit of research I landed on the passione to try.I didn’t hate the sound, in fact I liked them quite a bit on my violin (also refreshing to like the full set including e) but wasn’t blown away. Unfortunately the strings were a pain in other ways. Break in period was a bit long but not completely out of par but they never really stabilized and found myself even after months tuning my violin substantially more than my Evah’s. I know this isn’t terribly uncommon for synthetic gut but I picked these specifically because they were supposed to be more stable. All this would have been somewhat tolerable except that two of the strings ( g and d) broke within 4 month. While there was a time in my life I would replace strings twice a year, I’m no longer playing frequently. Enough to keep my instrument in shape but not enough that I should need to replace my strings more than once a year… so I’m pretty frustrated I now have to buy another set so soon

Other reviews are complaining that the strings did not last. These are hybrids Gut strings……Gut strings are VERY DELICATE and brake easily. They are great for older violins. I have two violins from the 1700’s and that’s what they are ideal for. But, do not be mad at the manufacturer when they brake. It’s just how the ball bounces LOL or how the strings brake. They are amazing strings that give a fat rich sound on an older violin. Gut strings give you a softer volume but since these are hybrids they are louder than just Gut. These Gut strings are made for very old violins…..it would be even worse with a Full set of Gut strings. Since they brake WAY WAY more easily. I wouldn’t put these on a modern violin. You will not get your money’s worth out of them. These are for the senior citizen violins.

They are plenty warm and complex and very stable in tuning (for gut), and nicely loud/project-y.Once they settle in after a couple of days you tune them, play a little warmup, re-tune the A string and you're off and running. Humidity and temp will knock them out of tune, but nothing horrible. I wish they made them for my bass!

These are my to-go violin strings. They work well, in my experience, with newer violins rather than older ones. The tone is sweet but has a certain depth to it, especially on the lower strings. If you perform baroque music or anything "gypsy," these strings really will work in your favor. I do find that the "E" string is a little less beautiful when compared to other string brands, but it's a minor difference. The only downside is that their life is pretty short: they'll start to fray in four-six months. And breaking them in is a dramatic process. You'll be tuning every five minutes for five hours.

Originally I loved these strings for the rich sound and figured that all the squeaks, especially on the A string, were my own fault. Avoiding the squeaking did improve my technique, but the strings definitely have their issues. They generally sound great on the G string, have occasional lovely moments on the E string, but the D and A strings are very touchy. I'm going to go back to Obligatos.FWIW, Passiones sound lovely on my cello, but not the violin.

I tried a whole selection of syn. strings before going for gut. From the reviews, I guess I was lucky. These strings brought my violin alive. They gave it an authentic voice. Now the first few days, I thought maybe I had made a mistake, but within a week they were wonderful.I do not have any problem with them staying in tune. I don't take my violin out of my home and generally play a minimum of one to two hours continuously each morning. After about a month, I almost never had to adjust the tuning. In fact most days its only a little off from the day before. I have no muddiness or woofing. My G string is clear and rich and has both great overtones and "undertones." (Harmonics go both ways.) After a year they sound actually better. But none the less its time to buy another pair.I must note that I tried them on my other violin and it sounded pretty bad.Clearly, by the reviews, these don't live up to the professional's standards. However, I question those reviews where the people went back to syth. strings over gut. Their ears and technique may have accommodated to syth. strings being the standard of what the tone should be.

I had the Pirastro Violino before and it suited the violin just fine- but I was itching to try out something new. The Passiones turned out to have a nice, rich sound with a lot of complex undertones once it settled down. It did take a while to settle down- but no more than the Gold (which I use on my other violin). The G does not feel any different from the Violino G though. Also, I use an Oliv Gold E- so I can't yet comment on the one that came with the set.Overall, its very nice indeed. I think my violin has taken to it !
