Besides, the reviewer explaining why the scale of the device is too large for fine scribing like cabinet, making or countertop work the build quality is laughably bad. 1) in order to hold your marking tool, you turn the brass knob (A) (green) to draw in the clamping surface (B) (blue) so that your pencil or marker is held firmly. The problem with my unit was that the molded plastic threads did not engage, and as I tried to solve this by first chasing them, you can see the buildup of plastic shavings on the brass disk. Once chased, they still did not work. I am glad that I also purchased the.Saker brand unit which is machine, aluminum and well it’s seemingly more complicated and not as superficially clever, such as lack of the roller bearing, with a little thought. It’s easy to see that will not only work, but will pick up small changes in mating surface dimension/geometry.

I suppose if you're trying to scribe a very rough outline with cutoff material more than an inch (that is, if the wasted material is going to be a lot) then you might find this tool useful. I did not! I thought that the bearing end would make scribing for cabinet placement easier. While the bearing part did in fact work, the amount of cutoff would have resulted in a lot of unnecessary waste. This is due to the fact that the tips on this thing are very long compared to using, say, a compass for scribing, and the way this is designed the pencil can simply never get close enough to the edge to do anything even near a fine scribe. For cabinet work, for furniture building, well, for nearly any kind of woodworking that I do - this tool is simply a waste of money for me. I would not recommend this product in good conscience.
