This base was to replace the worn out and cracked base that was nearly 30 years old. I ordered a different one on Amazon and found it to be out of thinly cast metal. That is fine if you are mounting a lamp directly on to it but I have an 8 foot tall post. This mount did not and would not support that kind of load.This is a heavily cast aluminum base with set screws to secure the post. There is a short aluminum pipe insert that goes inside of your post at the bottom to help reinforce it. Since most posts are rather thin walled, this insert gives thickness and a far better anchoring point for the set screws.The base comes with anchor bolts to put into concrete and I did not use these as I already had a base. I used concrete anchors to hold the base to the existing pad.Construction is heavy duty and this should last many years. I would recommend this base for any 3" lighting post.

Helps make full use of your lamp post... instead of burying it directly in the ground, or making your post too permanent in concrete. I just left a review on a Designers Fountain 31336-BZ Bayport-DS Post Lantern...but let's not forget the post adapter, which keeps my beautifully installed lamp post upright. I painted it a bronze finish to match the bronze lamp post... I followed the instructions to set this in my concrete tube while the concrete was hardening...this base post is solid. I did have one slight issue with the set screws at the top. I would like to see the allen-screws made from stainless steel...I paid a visit to a local hardware dealer to swap out these set screws for ones made out of stainless...I just hate to see rusty screws.

I could not find a similar item anywhere. Some that looked rather similar in a big-box hardware store were made of formed sheetmetal and not nearly as heavy & strong as this cast metal adapter.
