The Stainless Steel Mounting Rack Holder ensures stability, with a 2.1-inch ground plug that provides easy, secure and wind-resistant installation. The set comes with two transparent plastic tubes which slip easily into the mounting rack. They are designed to withstand freezing temperatures without cracking or breaking and have stayed in tact through a rather brutal winter in the Midwest. The rain gauge can be mounted to a post fence or standing object (screws included) or easily inserted into the ground. The plastic tube can be lifted out of the metal frame for convenient emptying and cleaning. The large numbers and blue make it easy to read from a distance, but they also make it very obtrusive. It is great in the vegetable garden where appearance is not as much a factor, but I would want one smaller and less gaudy to hidein a decorative garden.

Normally you want to place a rain gauge far from structures. I used the pick that comes with this to place in the middle of an open area in the landscaping that's far from the house and other trees and bushes. Sadly, this makes it near impossible to see DURING a rain event. Being that this is "old school" and analog you've got to go read the measurement. Waiting for the rain to stop and ground to not be too muddy to trample out to read the gauge it's possible some rain has already started to evaporate from the gauge. It's great to have to get a general idea of how much rain we got. I got this more to monitor my sprinklers next grass growing season, but I set it out to measure how much rain we got during a wet stretch of weather. It was fairly accurate to my neighbors "weather station" that tells him how much rain we got in an app on his phone (and a website that I can view). I like that there's a "spare" gauge. Wish there were two holders so I could measure the sprinklers in two places next spring.

This Stainless Steel Mounted 7 Inch Rain Gauge is a Winner! This Stainless Steel Mounted 7 Inch Rain Gauge is a Winner! This unit comes with a spare tube; however, the manufacturer claims it is freeze-proof and unbreakable… The holder is made from stamp cut stainless steel sheet. It is designed so that it can be placed in the ground to measure rain or watering with the sprinkler. Or, it can be mounted. I chose to mount it to one of my fences. If it did not fit there well to take up the gap of the soil spike, I would have cut it off, leaving just a horizontal platform for the measuring tube. Thankfully, a standard 2” x 4” takes up the gap. I used shorter stainless steel screws to mount it to the 1” thick fence fascia.I do like the design. It will not get blown away by high winds. The clamp has a good “bite” on the tube with just enough play to remove it. However, that can also cause scratching on the tube, so care must be exercised when removing it. The tube is easy to read, especially when the numbers are lined up with the blue background. My gauge is deployed at eye level. This rain gauge will serve most people, as is, straight out of the box.Bottom line: 5 Stars for overall utility for the most users plus the bonus rain tube! Rust will not be your problem and neither will be tubes caught and blown away by the wind! 5 Stars
