I loved the raised design and how sturdy the hinges are. I did want to highlight the raised parts of the design and used a gold rub & buff wax and they looked great. This box had been my Grandfather's and after some wood repairs, sanding, & putting a new finish on, these hinges made the box new. The box was given to a family member for Christmas. I had no problem with the screws cracking the wood, but I did use a very small nail to make a starter hole for each screw.
