Used this to make a fishing rod holder on top of the car. Works great. Just a heads up in case you are reading reviews and not the item description you need to by the pvc.Helpful hints, put some foam on the ends of the case so you don’t break your rod tips.

Needed something to carry my baitcaster rods in for a road-trip. After some google searching and YouTube video watching decided to go with this. Couple of quick notes:• it fits on top of a Subaru Outback but I had to raise it up off the rails so that the u-brackets aren’t scraping on the roof of the car. Just use some foam backing from Lowe’s and cut it to shape.•the caps are designed to fit schedule 40 pvc however it can work with sewer piping (both are the same inner diameter, schedule 40 has just slightly thicker walls). Get sewer pipe with a bell-end. Use the bell-end to attach the locking cap on. Buy a regular end-cap and glue that on the other side. You won’t be using the metal end cap but this way it does work. Especially since most big box stores don’t carry 6” schedule 40 but they usually do carry 6” sewer pipe which is sturdy enough.• use rivets to attach the locking end cap. Don’t bother with the screws it comes with. Use 3/8”x 1/2” grip rivets. Can be found at Lowe’s etc. attach the rivets from the inside out so that you have the smooth end on the inside. Apply a gob of silicone on the river before inserting just so it seals it up. Using rivets is a permanent install which helps against someone just unscrewing the end-cap off.•it holds a decent amount of rods without reels. Unfortunately I don’t have enough rods to test what the max is but it’s a lot. Fits about 6 baitcasters with reels on if you do 3 in one way and 3 the other.•the roof install took a bit so be patient.

I imagine you can carry a lot of conduit with this, but I am using it for fishing rods. My longest rods are 7' and with the 6" PVC I can leave the reels attached. A few words about why I like this one from Reece and then a couple of install tips...This kit comes with everything you need to install the end caps and the U-bolts to fasten it to your rack. It looks like quality stainless steel for the U-bolts and a baked-on finish on the aluminium end cap and door. I'm installing it on a car-top rack so I positioned it with the door opening up. It stays in that position for loading/unloading. If you have room you could have it open to the side or down. The spring-loaded latch keeps a good seal on the door and the latch tension is adjustable. The hole for adding a lock is big enough for the largest padlocks.Installing:It comes with 8 screws, 4 for each end. As mentioned in the instructions, you can use rivets instead and I did. 1/2" grip and 5/32" diameter works. I had some 3/16" rivets on hand and they would have worked with minimal drilling. I just didn't like the idea that a thief was only four screws away from my rods and reels. On the door, I put the rivets from the inside-out so the smooth side would face my hand when loading. I put some chrome screw caps (found at motorcycle or auto shops) on the rivets with silicone to dress it up.Using Schedule 40 6" PVC pipe there was just a little extra wiggle room for the caps. I wraped a 1/2" strip of duct tape around the pipe about two times for a snug fit before putting the caps on and drilling the rivet holes. A thin bead fo silicone seal around the edge and it's water-tight.Each cap has a neat square molded in where you can add contact information. I used an old electric etching tool to write my driver's licence number. Hopefully that will be a further theft deterrent.I used 8-1/2" of the 10" PVC pipe. My longest rods are 7" and I could have used around 7' 8" for the pipe, staggering the four rod/reels in the door end. With the extra length, I can put four more reels in backwards for a, snug, total of eight.Lastly, I had considered making a rod holder using outdoor-rated wood and hardware. When adding up the cost I found this solution was only 10% to 20% higher cost, more weather resistant and a whole lot less work.

This really made my hubby happy. We just could not make the leap to purchase a prefabricated rod holder - just too expensive. So this kit, a PVC pipe, some flat black paint and we were set! It makes a great, really sharp looking fly rod carrier. In fact it looks so cool my husband hasn't taken it off the top of the SUV several months after our trip. I'm not complaining because it makes it easier to find the vehicle in the parking lot. It's a great conversation piece too - we get a lot of "what IS that" questions...! Couldn't be happier with the ease of putting it together and the durability. You can lock it which is important. It's stable and not noisy at all. It attached to the roof rails like a dream.

I don't plan on using this as a roof top carrier but will try to describe it as if I was.It comes with four u-bolts for mounting to a rack that appear to be stainless steel. these u-bolts, used in pairs would go over the 6" pvc pipe (not included) and then a bracket (painted steel) would connect under the rack to the two left or two right u-bolts so that you don't need to drill a hole in your rack. The nuts are nylon locking zinc plated. The brackets are 5-1/8" long and the hole spacing is 3-1/2" so if your rack is larger than 3-1/2" your going to need to punt. Also the u-bolts only stick down 2-1/4" below the pipe so if your rack is thick you may again have to punt. The ends are painted cast aluminum one solid one with a hinged door. They are attached to the pvc with SS hex head sheet metal screws. It has a spring loaded latch that has to be pulled and turned to open or close. The latch appears to be made from stainless steel. The door is rubber gasketed and comes with a provision for a lock. (I wouldn't put a lot of faith in the gasket or lock)All in all, it is functional and sturdy and work well for my needs. If all hardware was SS it would be much better, I can see having rust stains on the top of you truck after a few years. I paid fifty bucks not too bad.
