HOW TO USE

How to use descaler

  • Add contents of sachet to 1 liter of warm water, dissolve, and then pour into water tank.
  • Remove filter holder and turn machine on.
  • Place cup under brew spout and run out about 1 cup of the descaling solution. Run about a ¼ cup out through the steam arm. (For superautomatic machines run all the solution through the steam wand and set on hot water not the steam setting).
  • Allow to stand for 15 minutes, and then repeat the process. Repeat the entire process until all the solution is used up.
  • Rinse thoroughly by flushing one tank of clean fresh water through the system exiting through the brew head and the steam wand.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DESCALING

WHAT IS SCALE ?

Scale can also be known as lime scale, calcium, or lime. It occurs when a build-up of mineral deposits in water form a noticeable white crust on the eating element.

In many areas, water quality is a significant problem affecting the efficient operation of an espresso machine. Given that water constitutes 98% of an espresso it is not surprising that the water quality issue must be addressed. Water quality relates to three factors - particulate matter like sediment, chemicals such as chlorine, and naturally occurring elements.

All these factors may vary throughout the year, season to season, and as authorities source water from different areas, making it essential to provide treatment to address each factor. Let’s look at each factor, the problem and the treatment.

before and after descaling

PARTICULATE MATTERS LIKE SEDIMENT

These are very small particles suspended in the water, often giving water a cloudy appearance. Without treatment these particles block the very fine jets and shower screen holes, affecting machine performance and altering the coffee taste.

A filter of 5 micron or less on the water line to the machine will remove the particulate matter, however the filter must be changed regularly.

CHEMICALS SUCH AS CHLORINE

Chemicals in water can naturally occur or may be treatment chemicals, like chlorine. They affect the taste, appearance and odour of water and this will

be transferred to the coffee. Filtration treatment can be highly effective in safely removing these chemicals provided it is the correct filter and is regularly replaced.

NATURALLY OCCURRING ELEMENTS THAT CAUSE HARD WATER SCALE

Many areas have high levels of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate in the water which becomes a scale “crust” on surfaces when water is heated.

As calcium and magnesium carbonate are soluble and do not affect the colour or appearance of water, they cannot be removed by filtration.

Scale occurs on the boiler, the heating element, and the pipe and jet network in an espresso machine, and affects machine performance eventually machine failure if not treated.

WHY DESCALE?

Scale build-up causes equipment downtime leading to increased machine service frequency, more part replacements and a shortened machine lifespan. Scale build up also reduces the quality of espresso flavour. Once scale has formed in the boiler and pipe network, it can only be removed by the use of specific acidic descaling chemicals.

Descaled Boiler

1. Scale free boiler:

  • Pressure able to build -up
  • Steam wand works effectively
  • Hot water is able to drain

Scaled-Boiler

2. Scaled up boiler:

  • Lack of pressure
  • Steam wand not working
  • Unable to drain
  • Taints taste
  • Won’t heat correctly

before and after descaling

Scale build-up in the boiler obstructs water from direct contact with the heat source, impairing the boilers ability to heat water effectively. When water is unable to reach the optimal brewing temperature the flavour of the beans cannot be properly extracted, leading to a colder, less flavourful espresso. Flaky particles of scale may also appear in your espresso, affecting espresso flavour. When a scaled boiler is not heating water to the optimal brewing temperature, the crema is also impacted. Crema is the even layer of fine, golden foam that rests on top of an espresso shot and it’s seen as an important part of the espresso flavour and texture. A good crema is flavourful, foamy and lingers for around two minutes. A crema affected by scale will be thinner, less rich in colour and will dissipate much quicker.

This is the second time I've ordered this descaler - the first time, the 4 packets arrived in the box pictured in the product desciption (as expected!), but this time, the 4 packets arrived without the box, loose in a packaging envelope. I can only hope they are the same original product since they aren't in the original product box. I gave 4 stars because the descaler worked well and I'm hoping that the ones I received this time will work just as well even though it looks like I'm getting someone else's discards or returns.

After a year I was having issues with my Bonavita coffee machine. I've used Urnex monthly to maintain it but it began shutting itself down twice per brew cycle. After sending in a warranty request via email and explaining my maintenance routine and that I'd used it twice back to back, they suggested that I needed to use this instead. I thought that was probably a load of crap, but figured I'd do it so I could move forward with my claim. Used this twice back to back as well (per Bonavita) to clear it up and it worked! Can't argue with the results, so I'm sold on this going forward.

This was great for descaling my Breville machine which I use daily and ensures that coffee extraction is effective time and time again.

Pretty sure this is the same one as the sage branded one. Worked very well in my barista express. Would recommend for anyone trying to save on the super expensive sage one as it appears this I exactly the same just different packaging.

This is the same brand and supposedly the same stuff Breville sells to descale its machines. It’s much more convienent to buy here than through Breville.

I used this to descale my Breville. I was going to purchase the Breville product but the Breville cleaning tablet box that I have literally says "Cafetto" on it and these were significantly less expensive with the discount. I'm not sure whether the quality is the same but the machine seems to be running like new again. I would definitely purchase this product again.

I have a Breville coffee machine with a touch screen and it will almost automatically make our lattes each day. The machine cost is close to $900. I was penny wise and pound foolish at first and didn't clean the calcium buildup from my machine often enough. The result was a $350 cleaning by Breville.Cafetto Restore is a very inexpensive way to avoid having to do this. This acid solution works extremely well and it only takes about ten minutes to run the cleaning program. I can tell it is working well after using Cafetto Restore because, the amount of espresso in my cup increases without adding any time to the function. The calcium is removed so more liquid gets through the unclogged tubes. I now clean my machine at least once every 2-3 weeks and we use only RO water. We make 2-4 double lattes every day.Save money and use this product often.

Works a charm.I run this on the first of each month to ensure the machine is top notch. I make a LOT of coffee for the family (5 of us, so I get the spare!). Water here isn't hard, so limescale isn't a huge problem.... but with a Breville BES860 it isn't a cheap machine to replace :)Running this on the first Monday each month pulls all the gunk out very nicely. I also use it to soak the milk wand and run a fair bit through the steam wand itself to loosen up the knob (a known problem of the BES860's). If you have a stiff knob, this will loosen it up quick smart. Simply run and twist on/off a dozen times to release the crud out of the mechanism. After use its immediately obvious the machine performs better.A good post-use cleanup of the hopper/head/etc is necessary. Don't get this on your hands... its NASTY.I also use the CAFETTO group head cleaner periodically. Both ensure I get long use of an expensive machine.FIVE STARS. :)
