Sold by the Ingot ~ i.e. 1 Pound This ratio of~ 87.25% Bismuth, 0.75% Antimony and 12% Tin is the best ratio we have come up with as a substitute for lead. This alloy melts at about 395 F and is best cast or poured at about 500F. Testing the hardness with a Lee Hardness Testing Kit, we came up with an average of 19.3 on the Brinnell Hardness Scale, although there was a range during the testing. The bismuth gives you the weight (as close to lead as possible) and the tin helps holds it together and makes it less brittle. This is an alloy we have been asked to make a few times so we decided to make a larger batch and have it easily available to everyone. As we are still testing this alloy, we are offering it at a lower cost and asking customers for feedback and their thoughts on how it works. Yes, we know it costs way more then a lead version, but hopefully with more volume, we can offer better prices in the future. One item of feedback we got from our customer follows: I have some results from shooting this alloy over the weekend, very favorable in the limited testing I did. Accuracy and high velocity is not a problem if the bullet fit to the rifle's throat is right. No bore fouling, no problems at all. I even cleanly killed a small whitetail spike buck with my .223 Saturday using the alloy you sent. Ingots quickly arrived. My students used it as a lead replacement for their underwater robot. They created molds using a CNC router. The lower melting point allowed using wood molds without the wood burning. They were then easily able to drill mounting holes for the weights. As an instructor, it's nice to have a viable lead substitute for my students to work with. I'll be buying more.

Got my package early, they are beautiful 1 lb ingots. haven't made any bullets with it yet but I plan on it soon, will update when I do :)

While some may find this annoying being lighter than lead, for myself, a bigbore airgunner, this gives me an ideal weight for my rifle but a better ballistic shape being longer. This alloy is not a whole lot lighter than lead however, with what would normally be 405 grain coming in at almost exactly 355 grain. These shoot pretty good out of my Texan and I will be posting a few on everybody's favorite auction site for my fellow airgunners to try before investing in molding equipment. I got my best molds by pouring the alloy hot into a cold mold, setting the mold onto a blower fan in-between molds. I will certainly but this again, especially for hunting so I don't contaminate the meat.
