I was looking for something to cut thin gauge corrugated steel pole barn siding that would be quicker and less mess than using a cutoff wheel. Although this cutter did cut the metal, it did require some finesse angling the cutter head at different angles to grab and cut properly. I found using the drill in a low setting and going slow seemed to work best. After 6 cuts the internal teeth inside of the gearbox started to jump and lose engagement. It may work better on thinner material. I rated it 3 stars because it did work to a certain extent but it was not durable and was more time consuming than cutting with other methods.

I used this SainsSmart attachment with a spare Ryobi 1/2" 18V cordless drill. The instructions that are included are really insufficient to get this tool set up correctly. Installation was quick once I figured out that there's a locknut intended for the arm that touches the drill handle - locknut not mentioned in the instructions. The device worked quite well for cutting up aluminum and steel ductwork (I tested 22ga and thinner) once I got it set up correctly: Out of the box, the left wheel was bolted down so tight that it didn't turn at all, yielding jumpy poor cutting. Turned out the bushing that the wheel turns on isn't quite long enough for the body of the tool. Loosening the bolt that holds it led to the bolt spinning and coming completely unscrewed. I added a small o-ring to act as a washer, lengthening the bushing, and was able to tighten the bolt that holds it on. After that the tool worked well, cutting through sheet metal rapidly, easily managing straight cuts and shallow curves. There's also a tension setscrew that isn't explained at all in the instructions. I assume that will need to be tightened as the cutting wheels wear.Although it's not difficult to install, I recommend keeping the tool on a spare drill rather than moving it on and off. Torque requirements seem very low given its reduction drive, so just about any full size drill will work.Summing up: A simple attachment that works well. But users will need a bit of mechanical knowledge to get it going.

This metal cutter/nibbler would be a major time saver if it worked!! First time I tried it on a scrap piece of 29 gauge roofing panels it bound up and broke most of the threads off of the support rod. So after removing the piece that broke off and reinstalling the support rod I tried for 1/2 an hour just to get it to start cutting at all on the metal sheet and if it did it was only for an inch or so and then back to just spinning and grinding the paint off the metal. After making a few tweaks I could get it to cut maybe 6 inches but never in a straight line. If it does cut at all you have no control over which way its going to cut! Maybe left, maybe right, maybe in a circle!! There obviously was never much trials on the product or they would know that it doesn't work. This is one of those tools that every metal fabricator looks at and says "oh my god, i gotta have one of those" until you get it and it does nothing like it is advertised to do. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND, YOU WILL SPEND MORE TIME TRYING TO GET IT TO WORK THAN IT WOULD TAKE TO JUST USE METAL SNIPS AND BE DONE.

I had high hopes for this SainSmart Electric Drill Plate Cutter, but was sorely disappointed. It’s not very easy to install and the instructions aren’t very clear. I honestly can’t recommend this thing.

I've tried to use this on and off over several months and it's just been inconsistent. I've tried to rebuild it a couple times, but I think it get it working how I expect it should, I'll probably have to make some time-consuming improvements and I could just spend better money and get a better designed unit. The two big problems I have been encountering is that the cutting wheels just fail to be refined enough. I can't prevent there being too much of a gap, which results in the cutters just rolling across the sheet metal. I think the frame or bolts flex a little but I'm not sure. The second problem is that the bracing that keeps it from spinning isn't well designed so it'll twist and bind. It's just not very good which is unfortunate.

So they make automatic sheers that would be the best tool for cutting metal but this one worked for my needs after finding the right angle. It easily connected to my milwakee drill in just a minute. After tightening everything down, I was able to begin cutting. After a few secs, it stopped working and needed some finagling. The biggest problem it has is that the gears are not a perfect match and the tolerances are off. This creates a tiny gap between the two wheels which means it wont cut. You really have to hold the drill at a certain angle and then it will cut like a charm. I was cutting long 8' sheets for a garden bed wall and so needed this to work well. Once I got the angle, I was able to zip right through them. But even then, I would have to stop after a couple feet and readjust. Way faster than manual sheers, but honestly the automatic sheers is the best way to go. If you dont want to spend the $50 at harbor freight then this is a decent second option for less cost. 4/5
