Anchor Essentials: The Anchoring System

Seachoice, anchor

More Than an Anchor

Identifying the proper anchor size for a boat is not a perfect science. Boat type, boating conditions, and amount of rode and rope used, among other factors, all contribute to the ideal anchor for a given situation. An anchor is but one part of an anchoring system.

anchor line

The Anchor Line

The anchor line is a crucial part of the system. Its stretchy, elastic characteristics prevent any destructive jerking from damaging the anchor system when waves push or pull on your boat. Both 3-strand twisted and braided nylon ropes do a great job.

anchor chain

The Lead Chain

The lead chain is also an important part of the anchoring system because it adds weight to the shank of the anchor, providing a better dig or bite into the bottom. These lead chains usually come in galvanized steel or stainless steel, but are also available with a vinyl coating to prevent damage to your vessel.

Swivel, shackle

Shackles & Swivels

Other anchoring accessories can also support the system. Shackles allow the anchor system to take on more loads from a variety of directions. They are composed of sturdy materials like galvanized steel. Swivels alleviate the potential damage of twisting and turning from the boat's movement.

Choosing an Anchor: Boat Length

Boat Length is the primary consideration when selecting an anchor. It is a reference point for selecting the ideal size anchor for your vessel. However, keep in mind that the recommended sizes are typically meant for ideal conditions; also consider external factors like wind and currents. And when in doubt, always go one anchor size up.

Using this anchor as a secondary one for our 20 ft boat. It holds as it should, its small enough so its easy to put it away.We always go for galvanized marine products, and it never disappoints. Definitely recommended.

The anchor that came with my boat was a bit smaller/lighter and I wanted a replacement. This is a great anchor and never fails to grip the riverbed! Price was right as well! Don’t forget to use a leader chain with this anchor if you want it to perform correctly!

Bought for my speed boat. Use on local lakes. When anchored, we do not float downstream and stay put.

Used this to anchor out my 15 aluminum runabout. Held well in a sand bottom. Have not had the chance to try it in other conditions but as where I go mostly has a sand bottom it works for me.

Bought for my elderly dad to use with his fishing boat as his old one weighted 20lbs and was too difficult for him to pull up on his own. He cut this one down a bit to fit inside a seat compartment but he really likes it. Nice and easy to pull from bottom and holds well once set.

Use this on my Glastron 18.5' boat on a large lake - our boat weighs approximately 1900lbs. This anchor, when supplied with enough rope, has held true every time I drop it. I anchor mostly in waters from 6 feet out to 20 feet and have been in some choppy waters - never been a problem. Highly recommend this anchor type if you're looking for something.
