Anchor Essentials: The Anchoring System

Seachoice, anchor

More Than an Anchor

Identifying the proper anchor size for a boat is not a perfect science. Boat type, boating conditions, amount of rode and rope used, among other factors, all contribute to the ideal anchor for a given situation. An anchor is but one part of an anchoring system.

Seachoice, anchor

The Anchor Line

The anchor line, also known as the anchor rode, is a crucial part of the system. Its stretchy, elastic characteristics prevent any destructive jerking from damaging the anchor system when waves push or pull on your boat. Both 3-strand twisted and braided nylon ropes do a great job.

The Lead Chain

The lead chain is also an important part of the anchoring system because it adds weight to the shank of the anchor, providing a better dig or bite into the bottom. These lead chains usually come in galvanized steel or stainless steel, but can also come coated to prevent damaging your vessel.

Shackles & Swivels

Other anchoring accessories can also support the system. Shackles allow the anchor system to take on more loads from a variety of directions. They are composed of sturdy materials like galvanized steel. Swivels alleviate the potential damage of twisting and turning from the boat's movement.

Choosing an Anchor: Water Conditions

Water conditions are a big factor in how you anchor your boat. Coastal and open waters leave your vessel subject to wind, waves, and currents - requiring a more substantial anchor and rode. Anchoring for rivers and smaller lakes tends to be less critical since the boat is rarely subject to strong winds or currents.

Got this to use with our dinghy and deploy it in conjunction with 5 feet of chain and an Anchor Buddy. It is very effective and holds well in sand, gravel, or rock, even against a strong current. I am impressed with its holding and love the fact that it collapses for easy storage.

Kind of silly to have a rating for "lightweight" when it is a specified weight that the anchor weighs as a given part of its usefulness. (So I didn't mark any star there) The anchor is robust, and just the right size and weight to use with my 24' pontoon boat on our lake which is part of a river system. Looking forward to a long life for the anchor. It's got a very heavy galvanized coating which should keep it rust-free for the forseeable future, and works properly according to it's collapsable design, so...it's all good.

adding a written review and upping the rating to 5 stars because i took the anchor on a kayak trip and while i did not actually use it i did get a chance to get a good look at it, and i can say the design seems idiot proof, and simple enough to rig that anyone ought to be able to figure out how to thread the anchor rope through it so as to be able to pull it up and have it fold up as one would do so, thus preventing it from getting stuck in any obstructions on the bottom.

It is what it says it is. I got it during the winter months but ready to use it this spring summer and fall. I am positive that this will anchor my kayak when fishing. Good for the price. And a space saver due to it is able to collapse

Bought this to replace a bradford anchor i had to cut free of as i couldnt free it from the bottom. Won't use this until next summer, but see no reason to expect anything but great performance. I bought a chain and float rope to use with it and both look like great additions to ensure it'll hold and be surely retrievable.

I ordered two of these. One came complete, and the other one didn't come with a bolt through the horseshoe latch on the top (tie down part) of the anchor. I'm not returning it because I don't care that much, but that's pretty bad. The bolt wasn't even in the bag. It was just never attached to begin with.Otherwise it's a fine anchor. Cheaply made, but it'll definitely get the job done.

Es un ancla muy pequeño pero con peso moderado solo falta probarla y que funcione para kayak.
