Mirror Mode and Extend Mode
1. For MacOS: top left corner Apple icon-->System Preferences-->Displays-->Mirror or Extend Displays;
2. For Windows 10, press Windows key + P combination command-->choose Duplicate or Extend.
3. For Windows system laptop, if the external monitor could not work, please update the BIOS and graphic card driver from laptop official website.

This ended up working fine for my use case, although I ordered this thinking it could be used to convert VGA input from the existing monitor cable to DP output, which is not what it does. This replaces the VGA input cable from the monitor because it is a VGA male cable end, not VGA female.Just read carefully. It worked great, but I would have ordered a longer size if I could read better. I had to move my desktop computer to the top of my desk to make this reach my monitor. 1.5 feet is not very long.
