Other systems may be more robust but this works fine for smaller applications. I like the laser. This system is also less expensive than some others.

I've been wanting one but the price tag held me off for a bit. I'm glad that I bought it because it really makes hollowing a lot simpler. Well designed and made. 10 stars!

Elbow pain is gone! The tool takes a little getting used to but I'm finding once the articulation is figured out end grain turning is easier and shaping is so much more stable. Using the correct bit/chisel and tool post location are still critical factors but the increased stability is awesome!

If you want a mac daddy hollower that can handle huge jobs, this isn't for you. Having said that, I personally love the tool. I use it on my Jet 1642 EVS and setup is a cinch. It's rock solid and smooth; clearly nicely machined and an excellent value.I've done some nice hollow forms and have zero complaints about any aspect of the tool. I looked at some other products and really couldn't find a compelling reason to spend nearly twice as much for a similar solution.I want to mention that mostly I turn bowls and use a VB36 lathe for that, so I've researched the Carter tools and will end up getting their ginormous hollowing system for the VB, but the Simple system will handle all my other needs for the Jet.Very nice quality and a great price

I’ve had the Harrison Specialties Simple Hollowing System (SHS) now for about three months and have had a reasonable opportunity to use it on a number of hollowing projects – so it’s time for a review. This is a nicely made and finished tool, as are all of the Harrison Specialties wood turning tools that I’ve tried. However, its construction is lightweight as compared to other hollowing systems available. I am using the SHS on an old 12 inch lathe so that hasn’t been too much of a problem. This system would in my opinion work well on any lathe from a 10 inch mini up to perhaps a 16 inch medium sized lathe, but certainly no larger. The larger the swing of the lathe the higher up the post on the mounting base that the hollowing arm attaches thereby making the whole system less rigid, and after all having rigid support is why you use a hollowing system in the first place. So, from my experience the SHS works on my lathe for vessels of up to 10 inches in diameter and 8 inches or so deep. Anything larger than that and the lightweight construction of the SHS might be an issue.I’ve used a number of other articulating arm hollowing systems such as the Mini Monster, the Kobra and one offered by Trent Bosch. All of these are more stoutly constructed than the SHS, and in the case of the Kobra a lot more so, but the SHS works about as well as these on my lathe for the medium sized hollow vessels that I’ve made. Of course the SHS is also considerably cheaper to purchase than any of the others, so if you’re operating with a smaller lathe and want to try an articulating arm hollowing system the SHS may be an inexpensive way to get started.I do have some issues with the SHS. First, the mounting plate and the threaded rod that attaches the base to the lathe ways is in my opinion too small, and doesn’t secure the base tightly enough to the lathe bed. I corrected this by substituting a thicker and larger piece of steel to fit under the ways on my lathe, and drilling and tapping the base for a 5/16” bolt instead of the 1/4” threaded rod provided. This works fine so that the base now securely attaches to the lathe bed. Also, the hardened pins that join the articulating arms are held in place by small set screws threaded in the sides of the aluminum articulating arms, and I have found that the set screws can vibrate loose as you’re using the system, thereby loosening the joints on the articulating arms. Other articulating arm systems that I’ve seen attach the articulating arms together using a threaded bolt with a locking nut on the end to take up any slop in the joint. This seems to me to be a better way to attach the arms together. The problem with the loosening set screws can be minimized with some thread lock.I also wish that the SHS was designed to accept tools with a 5/8” shank instead of the ½” size provided. A thicker tool bar reduces vibration. The Simple Sheer Cutting Finisher does have a 5/8” shank turned down to ½”, but I am unable to use other 5/8” or larger boring bars that I have with the SHS.Finally, the laser attachment on the SHS works well. The attachment rods, although lightweight, nonetheless provide a fairly rigid support for the laser. I like that the laser is not battery powered, and don’t mind having to plug in the power transformer.Overall I think that the Simple Hollowing System is a pretty good deal for the money, and is priced at about half of what you’d pay for one of the competing articulated arm hollowing systems. Although lightweight it does a reasonable job with my lathe, with some minor modifications. It certainly is a fairly inexpensive way to get started with a hollowing system, and I would recommend it to anyone using a smaller lathe who will be hollowing small to medium sized vessels.
