About this item

  • Beautiful - Large full-color packet of Black Beauty Eggplant seeds (Solanum melongena). This popular heirloom variety is easy to grow and produces well. The large dark purple eggplants have the classic bell shape. Harvest when skin is glossy for best flavor and texture. Minimum of 400 mg per packet (about 100 seeds).
  • Productive - Eggplant germinates in 7-14 days when soil temps are 75-85°F. Plant 1/4” deep and space 24-36” apart in an area with full sunlight. This variety will grow 18-24” tall, can spread up to 18” wide, and will fully mature after 80-100 days. Plant in USDA zone 5-12.
  • Good Eats - Roasted with olive oil, grilled, breaded and fried crispy, creamy eggplant and feta dip, or the classic Eggplant Parmesan, are all delicious ways to enjoy this healthy vegetable. Eggplant is a close relative to tomatoes and potatoes and will be a prolific producer all season.
  • Easy to Grow - Instructions included on each packet. Plus, we are available to answer all your questions. If these seeds don’t germinate, we will happily make it right for you.
  • Safe Seed - Sow Right Seeds has taken the Safe Seed Pledge and sells only fresh Non-GMO heirloom seeds that are safe for you and your family.

These germinated but then didn’t grow from there. Disappointing considering the price tag compared to what I could have just purchased in the store.I grew many other things in the same garden bed but for whatever reason these didn’t take.

I started these in peat pots in a mini-greenhouse on February 9th along with the long, skinny variety. They were under grow lights until about late April (zone 6A here) and then brought outside. Interplanted with them are two green bean plants, so basically, eggplant, bean, eggplant, bean. The summers get hot here so the bean leaves do provide shelter. The beans also add nitrogen to the soil. Take your time growing these, don’t overthink or overplant; two plants should be plenty. These seeds are from 2020, and as of July 4, 2022, they are still viable. Like tomatoes, you need to pinch back the ‘suckers’ so the plants will focus on producing fruit instead of leaves. I haven’t done this yet, but you should use a bandana to act as a ‘cradle’ so the fruits don’t get tossed around too much.

These seeds are duds. They took far too long to germinate. And once they did, I only got one eggplant the entire season.
