About this item

  • Springfield Leather Company's Rawhide Lace Hanks.
  • Perfect for braiding, drum making, furniture repair and more!
  • Remember, when working with rawhide lace it will try to shrink back to its original length as it dries.

Great for braiding, used in drum making, furniture repair, etc. Just soak in water for 20-30 minutes, or until lace becomes pliable and easy to work with. But, remember...a most interesting property about rawhide lace is that when it is stretched around an object, it tries to shrink back to its original length as it dries. If wrapped tight enough it can even crush stuff!

The rawhide laces were so old & dry that broke when I tried to unwrap them.

The strip wasnt very even . The width was wavy, which doesnt work well for furniture. It was a little frustrating.

Purchased this stuff from Amazon, and it’s faulty, it was not cut right. Every place you see a knot it is faulty. Amazon says not returnable and seller is saying return it, but I have to pay shipping. This rawhide is worth $75, not acceptable

This rawhide lace worked great for stringing antique lacrosse sticks. Go into purchasing understanding that it is a natural material so the exact measurements or thickness of it may not be perfect but that’s what helps add character to the project. The hide became very playable after about an hour in warm water. While working with it, it’s helpful to re-wet to keep soft until finished working. Some parts of the 1/8” were still a bit wide for my use but I was able to trim it up with scissors while wet to get desired thickness. Once dried, it was nice and stiff to ensure strength and durability.

Horrible quality. Some spots thick, some so thin it breaks when handled after soaking. Some areas even had bits of hair left on.

I bought this rawhide lacing to repair a saddle that has rawhide lacing work. Unfortunately this lacing is very rough - and I don’t mean texture. It’s like I got the dregs, the scraps. The width is inconsistent. It is going to be a challenge to do any braiding with it that will look good. Overall a disappointment.

Perfect sized for lacing.I soaked it for half an hour in warm water, laced up my dad’s old shell-holder butt cuff on the buttstock, and set it out to dry. A day later, the rawhide had dried and shrunk back from the stretch I had put on it, and the cuff was properly snugged in. This effectively creates a custom fit, and is far more durable than using elastic.I got a generous amount of lacing, leaving me with plenty more to do other household repairs and such. I’m planning on putting the head on a drum with it.

Most of the lace is thin and becomes perfectly workable and braidable after soaking. However, the thickness will randomly shoot up to 1/8" or more in places. These thick sections are entirely unworkable no matter how long you soak, not to mention how the increase in thickness makes any kind of braid look sloppy and unprofessional. It also isn't truly 1/2" wide; the maximum width it gets to is 7/16" and goes all the way down to 1/4" in some places. Most of it is around 3/8".I was planning to use it for handle wraps on axes and other tools, but it's entirely unsuitable for this task. The only good thing about it is that it actually takes leather dye fairly well after a few applications.

Used this rawhide lace to reinforce rawhide chair seating. Having never done this before, I did not remove the ancient rawhide that was broken in a few places, but used new to structurally reinforce the pattern. (Plus, I could not find any tutorials of how to do this type of seating.) My skill isn’t perfect, but you can see new blended with old. This rawhide was amazing to work with—1 single piece did the entire chair. Don’t look too closely, there are errors! But not with product. Thank you for quality material to work with for this project.

I ordered two of these bundles, one bundle was awesome and I was able to do a snowshoe type seat on an old rocking chair. Exactly what I was going for. When I tried to do the same to the back of the chair the second rawhide bundle kept breaking every 8 to 10 inches. I kept trying to use it but it would not work. I was able to get a return for it being defective. GREAT customer service. I will order again and hope for another good one to finish the project.Update: I have finished my little rocking chair with the back. The replacement bundle worked great! Thanks Springfield Leather!
