Well made, and they work great.

Like many others, I have used Starrett products my entire career (35 years) with great satisfaction. I had an old Starrett pin vise that I loved and wanted a set of all four sizes. I was willing to pay four times the competitor's price to support this fine old American manufacturing company. Tragically, the product arrived with one of the collets broken and the fit and finish were garbage: crude, rough threads on the collet nuts and rough finish on the barrels. Wise up, Starrett, or give up; your choice! Either reestablish your quality to your old standards or quit selling junk!

I expected a high quality product using good materials, with smooth operation. Starrett should be embarrassed. The movement is rough and grabby, the treads are cut poorly, poor fit and finish, and the aluminum is thin and feels like a $4 product. It is made in the USA. My goal was to pay premium $$ for a premium product. The Starrett product manager that let this junk be released on the market should be fired. Product returned. I hope this doesn't signal the decline of a company that used to make products of the highest quality. Again shame on Starrett.

I appreciate finely made tools and gamble on this set which is said to be poorly made by other reviewers, they are right. There are 4 pieces in this set, other than the smallest one, all 3 pieces feel extremely rough to operate because the threads are poorly cut. The biggest one is so rough, the manufacturer even oiled it heavily trying to get away with it but doesn't work. Even though the smallest one is relatively smooth, it is nowhere as smooth as other Japanese and UK hand tools that I have, and the cap is poorly cut too. Have Starrett changed hands? Something is very wrong when my $10 Made in India pin vise set is many times smoother than this $100 Starrett which beauty is only skin deep.

These work as intended but aren't up to the gold standard of quality that Starrett used to represent and that their price would indicate. Threads are rough in all of them, even when lubricated. Starrett threads should be dead smooth. Still, they're far better and feel better in the hand than anything else out there short of Grobet or Bergeon.

Very nice, well made, and functional pin vises. Not cheap, but I find that the nice Starrett fit and finish makes a bigger difference than with something like a center punch that you don't really hold all that much.

If you have the money they're nice to have but in practice they don't do anything more than any other pin vise. The biggest difference is that the collet is a lot smoother when tightening it. I bought them because I like small, precision tools and had some extra money at the time. I also already had over a dozen pin vises that already did everything these did so they were strictly a luxury purchase. I'm not sorry I bought them but don't buy them thinking they are going to do anything more than far less expensive tools. Buy them to treat yourself to tools that look and feel good to work with.
