I bought this thinking “hey, Starrett is an old American company known for quality.” Skip to today, the box says “Made In China.” Might as well say they have no pride in their product on the box. Opening the package greets you with an inspection certificate with Chinese characters and a tool that is gritty and hard to slide. If I wanted half baked Chinese crap, I would have saved my 300 dollars and went to Harbor Freight.

This thing screams cheap Chinese manufacturing. I bought the 799 model because I wanted an 8” caliper and I trusted the Starrett name. I was shocked when I opened it. It comes in a cheap plastic case that won’t stay closed. The finish on the tool is atrocious and is so rough you can literally file your nails on it. The edges of the slide were never smoothed and are sharp as a razor. The plastic housing doesn’t come together at the lock knob and the set screws don’t line up with the holes (see photos). This $190.00 tool is seriously no better than a cheap harbor freight caliper at 1/10 the price. Shame on Starrett for allowing their name to be put on such a thing and leading people to believe they are getting the best quality instrument available. I’ve bought my last Starrett product for sure and it’s a shame. Save your money and pass on this thing. It’s not what you will be expecting by a long shot.

This is the second pair of Starrett digital calipers I have owned. I know they are more expensive than other brands, but they are worth the extra cost to me.

Very well made, easy to add battery, unlike other electronic calipers that have a battery compartment that is almost inaccessible. Readings are reproducible each time and agree with my other measuring devices. Very good product for the price.
