About this item

  • Innovative bracket design adapts and secures the existing half-height/low profile bracket of the PCI Card
  • PCI Express base spec 1.0a compliant for up to 250MBps of available bandwidth
  • LP4 Power Connector Included for Universal Voltage PCI Cards (3.3V/5V)
  • Compliant with PCI Express to PCI/PCI-X Bridge spec 1.0
  • No driver or software installation

This PCIe to PCI Adapter Card lets you use low profile PCI expansion cards in a server or desktop motherboard PCI Express slot. Compliant with PCI Express Specification 1.0a and PCI Specification 2.2, the adapter card connects through a PCIe 1x slot to provide a low profile PCI slot in its place. A spare full size bracket for PCI Express card is also included for use in larger desktop or server PCI Express slots. A versatile solution, the adapter card converts PCIe to PCI or PCI-X; a built-on LP4 power connector links the card to the computer power supply, allowing you to install universal voltage PCI cards (3.3V/5V). The adapter card offers an economical solution that lets you extend the usability of older or extra PCI Bus cards in newer PCIe capable systems. To ensure suitable installation in any low profile server or desktop computer, the PCIe/PCI adapter features an innovative bracket design that adapts and secures the low profile PCI or PCI-X card into the converted slot.

I bought this adapter because I only had one PCIe and needed two. One PCIe slot was occupied and I needed a second PCIe slot for my sound card. Note that PCI slots have max speeds that are slower than PCIe max speeds. As it turns out, using this adapter for my sound card didn’t work that well. The sound had static noise which it didn’t have when installed in a PCIe slot. So basically it works but limits the PCIe speed to that of PCI speed. I knew this in advance but thought I’d try it.

Considering how expensive this adapter card is I was extremely disappointed that it does not support half height, mini PCIe cards. I bought another adapter that is $11 and it has the screw mounts and screws for both sizes of cards. Another expensive brand that is about the same price as the StarTech adapter at least has both mounting options. I had to spend another $8 on an adapter plate to get all my device options to work making this almost a $100 solution which is ridiculous at ten times the cost of other working solutions I have. In addition to all the other failures this adapter does not work with the Google Coral TPU cards, computer does not boot.

The most important thing to know about this product is it will work in every system I am aware of regardless of BIOS/EFI or OS support. If you’re wondering why I can make such a claim its because your system already has these bridges in it; even if they are not currently in use. Most common modern chipsets and all current OSes (except perhaps a custom build) already implement this. This device simply adds another bridge through an expansion card device; instead of being on the mainboard itself. This also means any classic PCI compliant device should also works. But we know that’s not always the case. But don’t blame this adapter; if your addon card doesn’t work try it (and this adapter) in another computer. There’s also the possibility your card uses some odd sideband signaling or other uncommon features and may not work. In this case its unlikely even an onboard PCI slot in a modern computer will work. The downside of this adapter is its really only made to work with low profile PCI cards. If you’re looking to make this work with a full height card you’ll need to do some case modifications.I am currently using this in an external enclosure by means of a PCIe extender. I’m having good success with this method since the PCI bridge only operates over Gen.1 PCIe signaling.

I bought this for my SFF machine that was missing an extra PCI-e slot, but had plenty of PCI ports. I used this in combination with another bridge to mount on an empty slot where the PCI-3x16 was missing where the PCI-e 16 Bridge was placed with a PCI-e 1x wire ran to this device. I then connected my video card to the pcie-16 bridge and my video card works with no flaws and the picture is as clear as it can be as if it was installed with no bridges. This device helps a lot and I see it working for whatever else you need to use, even if it's not a video card. Just a note, my addition pci-e x16 had extra power from the power supply so I don't know if that is what made the difference. i never tried this stand alone, but it worked really, really good for me. I've had this for 3 weeks now and still, No Complaints. Very happy.

I bought this ages ago, but now I'm finally reviewing it. It works fine with Universal Audio UAD-1 cards, which is a pretty good indicator that it will work with anything since UAD-1s are notoriously finicky. There are two potential issues of which to be aware. First, since this adapter sits between your card and the motherboard, it adds about an inch to the overall height of the card. This could be a problem if your case is small and there isn't enough clearance. Luckily my 4U rackmount has plenty of space. Also, the card will flop around unless you find a way to secure it. I used a 2-inch long 6/32 screw and some spacers, but you may improvise with some cable ties or whatever else comes to hand.Second, this was not an issue on the UAD-1 card since it has no ports or LEDs, but if your card has a crowded backplane with ports, leds, breakout cables or whatever, it's possible that by adding an inch in height to it the ports could become inaccessible (or the card impossible to fit) without some not-so-minor case modifications. This is something to consider if you're hoping to salvage a pricy old sound card that has tons of breakout cables and/or ports.

I ordered 2 of these adapters because I wanted to use an old SCSI PCI card and a Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS in motherboard which has no PCI slots. I was skeptical at first because many interface adapters I've used in the past "partly" work at best. I was pretty worried when I opened the boxes for these adapters and neither had a driver disk. However, I simply plugged the adapters in with the two PCI cards and the PCI cards were detected and installed flawlessly. It's been alittle over a month since I started using them and I've encountered no problems. I will note that if your PCI cards are not "low profile" You WILL need to cut away part of your case if there are multiple ports on the back of the PCI card. I used tinsnips to do this but a dremel would also work.Overall for windows XP/7 they work great, but the physical attributes of this adapter are clumsy. Just make sure you have a big enough case for this adapter before order. I didn't measure it exactly but I'd eyeball this adapter at raising the PCI card 1.5 to 2.0 inches away from the motherboard.

I purchased this adapter to work with the Avertv HD DVR High Definition / Analog Video Capture Card PCIe the I also bought at Amazon.Installation was very easy, however the PCIe card did not have any physical support on the adapter to to help keep it straight. It is possible to get it in there properly, but proceed cautiously. The card you are using this with must have a half height bracket to fit in with this adapter. The card I bought had this, so it was not an issue.Even seated properly, and confirmed several times, the capture card did not work well. Apparently it did get power and it did communicate through the adapter, but the input was such poor quality that it was useless. The video was barely recognizable. The capture card does work properly when plugged directly into a PCIe slot, so I do not fault the capture card. I needed this adapter since my graphics card blocks use of the PCIe slot when it is installed, so without this adapter working, I can have either my capture card OR graphics card installed on this motherboard. I assume there just isn't enough throughput with the adapter for this type of device and function. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend it, although with another, less demanding device it may work adequately. At ~$40 that may not be worth the risk.
