I got this for my tank because I was looking to move to a bigger tank and it was really helpful. Super easy to use, the kids liked looking into it too.

Honestly they send you a refractometer just as described but you need calibration liquid to calibrate and also need a tiny glasses screw driver to adjust.... honestly why not include those items

So after a few hours of trying to figure out what I'm looking at, I think I got it. I'm assuming that it's a Brix scale. The equation is SG=1+((Brix*4)/1000)An easier way to think of it is to just multiply the reading by 4, and tack it on the end of 1.000.Example: Reading was 5, so 5*4=20, SG= 1.020Of course I have no way to verify this because my SG should be around 1.020 and according to this it's 1.014. Now, do I continue wasting my time with this thing or get a new one? I really hate false advertising. What a terrible product.

I can see why this is the industry standard, it's easy to use, easy to calibrate, accurate, and comes with a nice foam padded hard case and pipette. The pipette is a cheap plastic one, but it is there, and for aquarium use, it should still last a decade.

This works extremely well. I used a floating arm hydrometer for years, and once I purchased this, it's more reliable, easier to use. Wish I would have bought one of these sooner.

I was unsure that this product would work based off of the price however, it works great. It is easy to use, calibrate, and see the salinity of the water. I had someone check it against a high end Refractometer and it produced the same results. If you are looking for a good product at a reasonable price this would be a great purchase.

New to saltwater aquarium so I learned that I would need something like this to measure the amount of salt in the water. For the price, i went ahead and purchased it. After watching a few videos, it was easy to learn to use and provided consistent results. A must have for salt water tanks where this is such a big issue. Feels solid and not cheap. I would expect it to last for years.

For years I've used the plastic salinity hydrometer. It disturbs the fish and was a little messy. When it would dry, the floating needle would get stuck and I'd have to wet it and than shake to get it to move freely. It worked (sort of), but I didn't feel comfortable that I was getting accurate readings. Also for years I'd hear that a refractometer was the best way to measure salinity. However, I had been turned off by the pricing and was under the impression that tricky calibration was a must. It sounded like a laboratory instrument that would be fussy and require constant attention.Wrong on all counts. Pricing on this (around $15) cost a little more than the plastic version. Calibration was a snap - put a few drops of RO water on the glass, close the flap, look through the viewer and turned the screw until the line was at zero. That was it. Using is even easier, as you do the same thing with tank water but without the calibration step. The whole process takes literally just a few seconds.Definitely easy to use, but you do need to hold it up to a brighter light to get a clear reading. There is a blue line that will indicate the exact salinity level. No guessing and no estimating.I highly recommend for the serious saltwater aquarium enthusiast.
